Habitati for Humanity (HfH) needs the help of the Muslim community in the Bay Area to join forces with other faith groups to build a transitional homeless shelter for 16 veterans. The project is large compared to previous HfH projects, so there is a need for a lot of volunteers! We have a need for 6 volunteers, first come first served! Please see below for more information on this volunteer opportunity. For questions, please email hisham.said@masbayarea.org. _______________________________________ VOLUNTEER INFORMATION – Vermont House Site Location: 1072 Vermont St, San Jose, CA 95126 8:30AM – 3:30PM Parking: Parking is available on side streets near the construction site. Please carpool, check street signs for parking restrictions, and be sure to leave neighborhood driveways clear. It is best not to leave valuables visible in your car. Clothes: Please wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty, painted, or ruined. We recommend wearing protective footwear as the site may be muddy and wet. Most volunteers wear rain boots, jeans or shorts, an old t-shirt, and a sweatshirt. Layer for the weather and bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to stay protected from the sun. Bring rain gear, as we will work through light rain. Tools: All hand and power tools and safety equipment, including hardhats, goggles, and gloves, will be provided. You may bring your own hand tools if you would prefer to use them, but be sure to label them with your name. Lunch: We will break for 30-45 minute lunch at noon. Lunch will not be provided. After 7:00 am on your build day, please call our Rain Line at 510-251-6304 and follow prompt 7. If the site will be closed due to rain, the message will say so. If the message makes no mention of rain, assume the site is open. If your build day is canceled due to rain, we will make every effort to reschedule as soon as possible. Youth: For safety reasons, all volunteers must be at least 16 years old. Volunteers younger than 18 must bring a signed minor waiver form with them to the site. Usrah Orientation Sessions

Attend an orientation session to learn about the MAS Bay Area Usrah. We have two sessions on Saturday, January 10. The first is 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for attendees 16 and under (at least one parent must accompany). The second session from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. is for attendees older than 16. RSVP at: https://masbayarea.org/events/usrah-orientation-session/ The usrah is a spiritually-focused, activism-oriented program where MAS members meet regularly and develop brotherhood and sisterhood bonds. The usrah members are expected to participate in outreach and community service work to fulfill the mission of the organization. This video gives you a primer about what an Usrah is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuhT1ti28wc Here are comments from members about the usrah program: - “I like the usrah as it was highly structured with committed members and leader. I benefited a lot." - “My usrah was a place for me to grow, to learn new things, to practice what I learned. My usrah had a very diverse group of sisters, who shared their experience and reflections with so much love and care. Everyone looked out for each other and supported one another in our individual journeys to come closer to Allah (swt). Though many of us have moved far away, we stay in touch and support one another despite the distance. I always remember my usrah sisters, and it always makes me smile! Alhamdulillah for sisterhood for the sake of Allah!“ - “You get connected to your usrah members and know them closely.” - "In the usrah you identify goals for your spiritual development which your usrah members help you achieve.” An Usrah is made of up five to eight individuals who meet weekly to encourage and help one another become better Muslims. The members are similar in age and in their understanding of Islam. The group is led by a Naqeeb. Members meet regularly to study faith, encourage one another to righteousness and good deeds, and renew their commitment to work for Islam. It is an intensive, spiritually-focused, activism-oriented program focused on personal character development. Questions? eman.atef@masbayarea.org
