An abstinence based approach to prevent HIV, STDs, and teenage pregnancy

Premarital sex is very common in today's society, especially among adolescents. Even though sex before marriage is strictly forbidden in Islam, many unmarried Muslim youth are having sex.

Research mainly attributes this behavior to Muslim youth not being educated about sex in the home and/or masjid. Muslim youth fail to recognize the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of premarital sex, which is not taught in schools. A Doctorate research study will address this issue by teaching an empowering, abstinence based curriculum at NIA Masjid & Community Center. The curriculum has been infused with Quran and Sunnah as directed by University of Medina graduate, Imam Shadeed Muhammad, to best provide participants with the tools they need to abstain from sex before marriage.

Single, never married Muslim females who are between the ages of 13 – 19 are eligible to participate. Female Muslim youth will attend a two-day workshop with their age group as specified on the flyer in October. Pre and post tests will be used to test for success. The overall objective is to provide the girls with knowledge, confidence, and skills necessary to reduce their risk of HIV/STDs, teenage pregnancy, unhealthy marriages, and spiritual anxiety by abstaining from sex before marriage and strengthening their relationship with Allah.
