The National Islamic Association was established in 1985 to serve a growing Muslim community. Over the years, it has spawned a very dynamic and diverse community of Muslims from all walks of life. Being an inner city community, one of our primary aims is to safeguard our youth from the many pitfalls that plague the youth of the inner cities across the country. Our key strategy of achieving success is: a structured educational program, establishing positive alternatives and providing a wholesome environment for our youths. We seriously cater to the needs of our members and beyond with an array of effective educational, developmental, social and recreational activities and programs. We participate and are spearheading many community outreach programs to serve our neighbors and the wider society; and are involved with the City wide community Programs

Since August 25, Burmese security forces have been carrying out a campaign of ethnic cleansing against Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine State. Over half a million Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape killings, arson, and other mass atrocities. The Rohingya, effectively denied citizenship under Burmese law, have faced decades of repression and discrimination. About 120,000 remain internally displaced from waves of ongoing violence.

Compassionate Communication

Mohammad Hasan is coming to NIA Masjid & Community Center on Oct 15th to conduct Compassionate Communication. Effective communication is one of the most important skills in life. It is very important both on an organizational level for leaders, and on a personal level. We spend most of our time talking and speaking to people at work, home, school, and community. Many of us have spent significant amount of years learning how to read and write, how use technology, how to perform a particular job, how drive a car, etc but how much time have we spent learning how to listen and speak? Somehow, we are just expected to know and learn one or two things from your parents, family and friends and often repeat the same mistakes in listening and speaking. Effective leaders strive to improve their communication with their staff, spouses, family members, friends, and community members that they serve. . These social skills of listening and speaking can be learned and practiced until they become second nature.

Salat-al-Kusuf (Prayer of the Eclipse)

Narrated Abu Bakr: "The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the day when (his son) Ibrahim died. So the people said that the sun had eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e. birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse pray and invoke Allah." [Sahih al-Bukhari 1043] Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu`ba: We were with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) when the sun eclipsed. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) stood up dragging his cloak till he entered the Mosque. He led us in a two-rak`at prayer till the sun (eclipse) had cleared. Then the Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of someone's death. So whenever you see these eclipses pray and invoke (Allah) till the eclipse is over." [Sahih al-Bukhari 1040] The NIA Masjid & Community Center will take part in the sunnah of praying Salat-al-Kusuf this Monday August 21, 2017. Khutbah: Joe Bradford

In 2004 Joe Bradford graduated with LLB in comparative Islamic Law and Legal Theory from the Islamic University of Medina, KSA. His main academic interests at this time were financial law, legal maxims, the legal thought of the Hanbali school. Then in 2005 he became the first American to be accepted to the masters of law program in the same university. Bradford’s research during this period focused on euthanasia, arbitration in minority Muslim environments, business structures in medieval Islamic law, and the use of weak hadith in the Hanbali legal school. During this time Bradford took the opportunity to spend extensive time studying classical texts in legal theory, seerah, law, and theology. Bradford also began work in document review for several private and governmental entities, reviewing drafting and legal compliance issues. Shortly thereafter he started work as a senior consultant in Islamic banking, specializing in deal structuring, drafting review, and shariah compliance. A majority of his work focused on researching syndicated finance deals, corporate finance and investment products. In 2009 Joe Bradford received his Master of Law on adjudication in the Shafi school of Islamic law through the work of Mamluk era polymath Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi. After this he continued his corporate work, gaining experience in treasury products, mergers and acquisitions, syndicated loans, corporate finance, in addition to other areas. After returning to the US many questions about personal finance were posed to him. Joe Bradford began working with lawyers and financial planners to explore solutions to these issues in financial planning and estate planning. To formalize his study of the topic of personal finance Joe Bradford attended Rice University’s Financial Planning program. Some of his projects leveraging this experience include the Islamic Estate Planning tool MyWassiyah.com, the Muslim Money Guide (forthcoming), and several investment funds that he now advise on. Based on seminars he has delivered and answers to the numerous questions he received over the years on Zakat, Joe Bradford wrote Simple Zakat Guide. Currently Joe Bradford is researching mortgages and planning a seminar at the end of October on this topic. You can see the rest of his books and courses here. Currently Joe Bradford an adjunct at several institutions, teaching the Arabic language, Islamic law, and Quranic exegesis. In addition to teaching, he has been writing and furthering his research on financial transactions, pre-modern Islamic reform movements, and the Hanbali school.

Sex Education in the Mosque

“Sex Education in the Mosque,” a research project by the Rutgers Doctorate of Nursing Practice Team, will use an empowering, interactive curriculum infused with Quran and Sunnah. It will provide Muslim female youth with the tools they need to wait to have sex until marriage and strengthen their relationship with Allah in the process. Single, never married Muslim females between the ages of 13 and 19 are eligible to participate. The project will be divided by age: - October 08-09: 13-15 Year Old - October 22-23: 16-19 Year Old All participants must enroll by contacting Shaakira Abdul Razzaq at (908) 721 – 6039 or saa254@sn.rutgers.edu before October 8, 2016. Mandatory consent forms are available at the NIA Masjid & Community Center and must be completed before starting the program. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- An abstinence based approach to prevent HIV, STDs, and teenage pregnancy Premarital sex is very common in today's society, especially among adolescents. Even though sex before marriage is strictly forbidden in Islam, many unmarried Muslim youth are having sex. Research mainly attributes this behavior to Muslim youth not being educated about sex in the home and/or masjid. Muslim youth fail to recognize the physical, emotional, and spiritual consequences of premarital sex, which is not taught in schools. A Doctorate research study will address this issue by teaching an empowering, abstinence based curriculum at NIA Masjid & Community Center. The curriculum has been infused with Quran and Sunnah as directed by University of Medina graduate, Imam Shadeed Muhammad, to best provide participants with the tools they need to abstain from sex before marriage. Single, never married Muslim females who are between the ages of 13 – 19 are eligible to participate. Female Muslim youth will attend a two-day workshop with their age group as specified on the flyer in October. Pre and post tests will be used to test for success. The overall objective is to provide the girls with knowledge, confidence, and skills necessary to reduce their risk of HIV/STDs, teenage pregnancy, unhealthy marriages, and spiritual anxiety by abstaining from sex before marriage and strengthening their relationship with Allah.

Standing Firm (with Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi)

FREE Registration Until 4:30PM on Saturday February 20, 2016. Afterwards, there will be a Registration Fee of $10/person. Registration Link: www.niamasjid.org/StandingFirm ---------- The NIA Masjid & Community Center is excited to host a special guest speaker for #FamilyNight on Saturday March 5, 2015! *** Without a Doubt *** Have you ever experienced moments of fleeting uncertainly in faith? Doubted the very basis of everything you've grown up learning? We live in a time and place in which not only is Islam under attack, but the idea of God itself is under attack. The number of people who identify as atheists, or agnostic, is steadily on the rise. Our youth, especially those who were born and raised here are influenced by this society and some only pretend to be a Muslim for the sake of their families. Alhamdulillah, this is not the case with the majority of the youth. However, many have questions that cannot be answered or are dismissed by community leaders. That along with attacks on faith and God, the rhetoric aimed at Islam, and misconceptions do lead many to have doubt. How can our young people proactively address their doubts, reaffirm their faith, and avoid a crisis of faith? Join us Saturday March 5th at 4:30PM as we explore these doubts and seek to reinstate our connection to Allah. Note: this session is being held exclusively for the youth. *** Question the Question *** Modern times have given rise to many ideas, such as Liberalism, Feminism, LGBTQ, the Nation-State, etc. Many use these ideas to question and attack Islam, to paint it as backwards and having no place in our times. The average American Muslim is presented with questions from family, friends, and coworkers they are unable to answer and are left feeling embarrassed of their faith and unsure of their beliefs. How can we stop being on the defensive? How do we challenge these societal norms? How do we gain the confidence to question the question? We invite the entire community to join us on Saturday March 5th at 6:30PM as we "Question the Question." REGISTRATION REQUIRED: http://www.niamasjid.org/StandingFirm ---------- Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, PhD, is the Dean of Academic Affairs at AlMaghrib Institute. He is one of the few people who has combined a traditional Eastern Islamic seminary education with a Western academic training of the study of Islam. Shaykh Yasir graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston, after which he was accepted as a student at the Islamic University of Madinah. After completing a diploma in Arabic, he graduated with a B.A. from the College of Hadith and Islamic Sciences, and then completed a M.A. in Islamic Theology from the College of Dawah. He then returned to America, and completed a PhD in Religious Studies from Yale University. He has authored several books, published academic articles, and appeared on numerous satellite and TV stations around the globe. His online videos are of the most popular and highly-watched Islamic videos in English. Shaykh Yasir Qadhi is a resident Scholar of the Memphis Islamic Center. He is also a professor at Rhodes College, in the Department of Religious Studies.
