It's that time again for Pride and Shine volunteering in Sterling Heights. Twice a year we have the opportunity to help seniors and shut ins take care of their yard cleanup before winter sets in. A big obligation for us as Muslims is to care about the condition of our neighbors. This is also a great opportunity for us to build interfaith relationships as most of these neighbours are elderly men and women who have never interacted with Muslims face to face and are more liekly have no real knowledge of Islam. Let's show them our Islam rather than learn about us from biased media.

Unlike other years this year's Pride and SHINE day is 3 days before our general elections, which makes it very critical for us muslims to be involved in this cause. Our involvement in these opportunities may make a huge difference in these peoples' lives and help them be open minded towards muslims and other races.

Anyone willing to assist during this fall's Pride & SHINE Day should respond to assistantoutreach@ionaonline.org or may call 586-744-0638.

"The City of Sterling Heights is once again getting ready for another Pride & SHINE Day, encouraging residents to make their properties “SHINE” in preparation for the summer season. The city has declared Saturday, Nov. 5th for the Fall Community Pride & SHINE day. The citywide cleanup is part of the SHINE (Sterling Heights Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence) program through the Community Relations Department. The program is aimed at protecting property values by encouraging all residents to maintain the exterior of their homes. The SHINE initiative works with school groups, civic and church groups to provide volunteers for those residents who need help with property maintenance because of age, physical disabilities or financial hardship.

In the past, we have been fortunate enough to have several volunteers such as yourself, come out to contribute their time and efforts, which is greatly appreciated. This is a great opportunity for students, family members, organizations and co-workers to get involved with helping out their fellow neighbors and earn some community service hours. I've attached an informational flyer, in case you would like to spread the word.

Volunteers will meet around 9:30 a.m. at First Church of Sterling Heights, located at 39400 Dequindre Road. Work assignments will not be longer than 3-4 hours. Coffee, water, bagel and doughnuts will be provided for volunteers.

Once again, thank you for your volunteer spirit, and your continued support of keeping Sterling Heights a great place to live!" External Event Url
