"Happy Marriages" is a workshop for anyone interested in understanding Islamic notions of the feminine and masculine, regardless of one’s relationship status. Topics covered will attempt to revive the Islamic understanding of femininity and masculinity for the purpose of healthier relationships and families. Participants will (i) assess notions of God, gender, love and relationships through a personal and contemporary cultural lens (ii) learn about the biological differences that influence our gender roles, and (iii) practice techniques that will facilitate a healthier way to perceive and act in a relationship. This workshop is Part I of a series.

Babysitting, a delicious meal, and materials will be provided. We strongly encourage participants to bring a pen and a notebook.

Instructor Bio
Karim Serageldin received his BA in Psychology and Comparative Religious Studies in 2004 and his MA in east-west psychology with a focus on spiritual counseling and contemplative practices in 2007. He is also a certified professional life coach and has been practicing counseling and coaching from an Islamic perspective for five years. Karim’s professional focuses include methods towards achieving personal goals and self care, developing a contemporary approach to Islamic psychology, couple’s counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy, existential and cultural struggles, religious practice and dawa, adolescent development and gender roles and sexuality.

Co-Facilitator Bio
Sima Sweid, MA is currently completing a doctoral internship at Palo Alto’s Community Center for Health and Wellness. Her thesis focuses on Islamic psychology and her clinic experience ranges from couples therapy to child/play therapy, as well as adulthood issues such as depression, anxiety and mood disorders. Sima Sweid and her husband conduct workshops for Muslims couples throughout the Bay Area. External Event Url
