Hunger Walk/Run 5K 2018

Its that time of year again! The Hunger Walk/Run 2018 is around the corner! For the past few years we at Madina Institute USA, along with the other masajid around Atlanta, have excelled in our participation at the Annual Hunger Walk/Run hosted by the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Join us as we look to continue our tradition by helping and contributing to this excellent cause, while enjoying the day outside with family, friends, and the community. Here are some pretty staggering statistics on hunger right here in our back yard... 18.4% Georgians live in poverty, with 15% of them being food insecure including 1 in every 4 children and 1 in every 10 senior citizens. That means these people don’t even know where their next meal will come from. Yes, Madina Institute is participating with the Atlanta Community Food Bank to help put food on their table. Here are 3 ways in which YOU as Madina Family can help: 1. Donate food. Drop off your non-perishable goods at the marked bins in the Madina Institute masjid. Everything helps so donate what you can! 2. Sign up, at the link given below, to walk/run the 5K as a part of our Madina Institute USA Team. 3. You can also help by donating to our team using the same link provided below. Dont wait, start signing up and donating now! https://goo.gl/26yHSr For more information, please call Br. Aging Gracefully

We’re pleased to announce the 2nd part of Madina Institute’s “Journey Through Life” series called “Aging Gracefully”! This workshop features a panel of experts delving into the habits and practices necessary to live a balanced life from eariier years - physically, socially, and spiritually as we age. We'll gain an understanding of how to “age gracefully” while maintaining a positive mindset and ensuring a sense of independence. Aging is often a taboo topic shoved under the rug in our communities, despite the reality of it affecting us all with due time. How can we retain our sense of self as we get older and start losing the youthful capacities we used to have? How do we receive support from others while at the same time live an independent life? How can we lead a deliberate, non-attachment and cheerful life? And lastly, how can we prepare ourselves physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually for this inevitable process? Join us at Madina Institute on Friday April 14th @ 6:30PM as we have a candid discussion on this topic. Our Feature Speakers are: Imam Nadim Ali - Nadim Ali, Licensed Professional Counselor Hasan-Naaila Clay - GLI Counseling LLC Rahaf Albochi - Olive Tree Nutrition Shaista Kazmi - Apna Ghar, Inc. Plant - A - Life

Madina Institute is excited to host its first Tree Planting Event in collaboration with Trees Atlanta! Experience a unique connection with Earth and soil and ‘plant a life’. The Prophet ﷺ is reported to have said, “Muslims will always earn the reward of charity for planting a tree, sowing a crop and then birds, humans, and animals eat from it” (Bukhari 3:39; 513).... The tree planting will be in the Clarkston area. Trees Atlanta provides the trees, gloves, and orientation. Below are important notes: Logistics: • We will be planting trees from 9 am to 12 pm. Please arrive at 8:45 am to get signed in so that we can begin promptly at 9 am. It is important to arrive on time as we only provide one demonstration (it takes 20 minutes) and every volunteer needs to see it. A Black History Month Event - Film Screening & Panel Discussion

In honor of Black History Month, Madina Institute will be showing the Netflix Original Documentary, "13th" followed by a panel discussion with some of our very own community leaders: - Imam Mansoor Sabree - Imam Furqan Muhammad - Br. Hasan Clay - Sr. Naaila Clay - Br. Amjad Taufique According to Fortunate Magazine, the film is: "Named after the 13th constitutional amendment, which abolished slavery except as "punishment for crime," the doc uses archival footage and expert commentary to make the case that slavery hasn't disappeared from the U.S.—it's evolved into our modern system of mass incarceration, one in which many prisons are run by for-profit companies and prisoners can be paid a pittance to work for corporations." We invite you to join us as we watch this film together and provide an open and honest learning environment to ask questions and learn more about the issues discussed within the film and ways that you can actually help in the weeks that follow (Stay tuned for details on this as well!) Program: Film: 4:30-6:15pm Break for Maghrib Panel: After Maghrib - 8:00pm Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V66F3WU2CKk

Straight Talk for Madina Youth

Straight Talk - Youth Workshop: In this workshop the Muslim Youth are being provided a venue where they can share what they are facing in the current environment. Areas of focus in this first workshop are as follows: 1) Talk about self-esteem, to understand what it is and how it is impacted. At the beginning of this workshop the audience will take a self-esteem survey. This survey will help ISB understand how the Muslim Youth fare when it comes to self-esteem in the different communities. 2) Developing friends and being an influencer. The concepts here come from Dale Carnegie's book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People." The workshops go over the 6 concepts that the youth can do to develop their friendship and be a positive influencer. 3) Discuss how the Islamic faith teaches Muslims to be tolerant of other faiths and backgrouns showing specific examples. This is to show the youth that the stereotypes and negative comments are often misconceptions. 4) Role-playing scenarios. Here, the audience will be split into different groups where they will be assigned a role-play (a topic related to maintaining your identity). The objective is to hear how the youth would respond to those scenarios and coach them on the optimal way to handle the situation (based on what was discussed in the workshop). At the end of the Youth Workshop the audience should walk away with a toolkit on how to maintain their identity as well as enable the youth in becoming a positive influencer in their respective social circles.

Hunger Walk/Run 5k 2016 - Atlanta Muslims United Team

As January draws to an end, it's time for us focus the month of February on establishing a strong presence at the Atlanta Community Food Bank Hunger Walk, just as we did last year. Last year, the Atlanta Muslim community had the largest showing of any other group with 633 of us (represented by 29 unique mosques, schools and organizations) and we raised $29,000, making us the second leading contributor! I can't tell you how much of an impact this has had on our community and how much the ACFB has thanked us and appreciated our efforts. You can hardly find a picture of the Hunger Walk last year, without a member of our community in it! Looking to also unleash your competitive side? We have a trophy that will be awarded to the Team of the Year from the Muslim Community, based on the number of people recruited to their team. Last year, Madina Institute just slipped past RCM, Masjid Hamzah and GIC with 103 registrations to take the trophy. Let's see if Madina keeps the trophy for 2 years in a row!
