The Muslim Community of Knoxville cordially invites you to attend the University of Tennessee's 2nd annual Siddiqi Lecture* in Islamic Studies, sponsored by UT's Department of Religious Studies.

This second lecture in the series will be given by Jonathan A. Brown, the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and Director of the Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim Christian Understanding.

With controversies such as the protests calling for depictions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Texas and tragedies like the attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical paper in Paris, much confusion surrounds the place of freedom of expression in Islam and Muslim societies. For Americans, seeking to understand these issues raises compelling questions about the issue of freedom of expression in our own culture. This lecture will address the question of the freedom of expression in the Islamic tradition and the West from both sides of this divide.

*The Siddiqi Lecture in Islamic Studies was launched in 2014 to bring top scholars in the field of Islamic Studies to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and to foster a greater understanding of Islam in East Tennessee. External Event Url
