Join us for an awareness dinner on racial and religious discrimantion in the Adelphi UC Ballroom! Keynote Speaker: Khalid Latif Special sessions with Omar Torres and Omar Shareef! Khalid Latif is a University Chaplain for New York University, Executive Director of the Islamic Center at NYU, and a Chaplain for the NYPD. Imam Latif’s exceptional dedication and ability to cross interfaith and cultural lines on a daily basis brought him recognition throughout the city, so much so that in 2007 Mayor Michael Bloomberg nominated Imam Latif to become the youngest chaplain in history of the New York City Police Department at the age of 24. Most recently, Imam Latif was selected as one of 60 NYC leaders to serve on May Bill Deblasio’s Transition Team, helping to recommend and select individuals for key roles in the current NYC administration and also appointed to a “Task Force to Combat Hate” by NYC Public Advocate Tisch James to deal with the rise in Islamophobic, anti-semitic and anti-sikh sentiment in NYC.

Opening Minds, Closing Taboos: Reconciling Islam and Mental Health

Join us on March 8th for a talk on Mental Health and Islam with Guest Speaker Omar Shareef in the University Center Room 213. *Food will be served* Omar Shareef is a seasoned Islamic youth activist from New York and is involved in the Young Muslims youth group and the Muslim InterScholastic Tournament (MIST). He's the former MSA President of Stony Brook University and St. George's University School of Medicine. Omar does stand-up and improvisational comedy in his spare time and currently dedicates himself to satirical comedy on his site, Muslim Medicine (www.muslimmedicine.net). He is a recent graduate of St. George's University School of Medicine.

Adelphi University MSA Presents: Haroon Moghul Speaks At Islam Awareness Week

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Kind Assalamualikum! Adelphi University MSA Presents: Haroon Moghul Speaks At Islam Awareness Week. Monday, April 18 marks the beginning of Islam Awareness Week! Come hear Haroon Moghul speak TOMORROW at 2:30 pm in Campbell Lounge room 3. Food will be served. Bring all your friends! Haroon Moghul is a commentator and broadcaster who wishes he could just be a writer. He's appeared on all major media networks and has been published at the Washington Post, TIME, CNN, Guardian, Foreign Policy and Haaretz. He's the author of a novel, The Order of Light, and an upcoming memoir, How to be a Muslim: An American Story. Haroon has been a Fellow at the Center on National Security at Fordham Law and New America Foundation. He advises New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art on multicultural audience development, served an expert guide to Islamic history in Spain, Turkey and Bosnia, and was Director of Public Relations for the Islamic Center at NYU. He graduated from Columbia University with an M.A. in Middle East, South Asian and African Studies.
