0.0000Walk to Makkah!
Join us today on our 10 week Walk to Makkah (6,614 miles). It is a great and fun way to commit to your health and fitness. Each participant walks independently at their own pace, time, and the place of their choice, but yet their miles are contributed to the team to help reach Makkah before Ramadan! The Walk to Makkah Program Logistics 1) As one team, MIC members will walk a total of 6,614 miles. 2) The total miles walked is the actual travel distance from MIC to Makkah, Saudi Arabia. 3) The duration of the program is 10 weeks. We start the walk on Saturday, March 3rd and end the program on Friday, May 11th. 4) The minimum number of miles each team member is expected to walk is 10 miles per week. Any additional miles walked are encouraged and are contributed towards the team's total mileage crossed. 5) Every member walks at their own time and at their own pace, indoors or outdoors, and is responsible for keeping a record and reporting his or her total weekly walked miles every Friday by logging on to the following link: http://goo.gl/forms/DyRyQqG0XzGfTxJf1 6) On Saturday mornings, an e-mail will be sent out to update the team on its progress and the distance covered towards our final destination. 7) Each participant will be charged a $10 registration fee. 8) On the morning of Saturday, March 3, team members will be invited to meet at a local park to launch the Walk to Makkah Program by walking the very first miles, as a community, towards health and fitness. After the walk, we will meet at a local coffee shop for hot drinks/light snacks. The place and time will be emailed to all registered participants. 9) Please contact Dalia Al-Shihabi at walktomakkah@gmail.com for additional information.

0.0000Building Bridges Through Comedy -Meet the Author
JOIN US SATURDAY SEPT 17 at 11:30 AM for a unique opportunity to meet author Zarqa Nawaz and discuss her new book: Laughing All the Way to the Mosque! Zarqa successfully uses comedy to share her experience as a Muslim growing up in Canada. Zarqa is the creator of the hit comedy Little Mosque on the Prairie. Little Mosque on the Prairie brought Zarqa Nawaz’s laugh-out-loud take on her everyday culture-clash to viewers around the world. And now, in Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, she introduces U.S. readers to her sometimes absurd, sometimes challenging experiences growing up as a Canadian of Muslim faith. A bestseller in Canada that was shortlisted for a number of Canadian literary prizes, including the prestigious Leacock Award for Humor, the book provides a much different perspective of the female Muslim experience—one that is normal, humorous, and positive. Please invite friends from the interfaith community! Refreshments will be served. Children are welcome. There will be crafts workshop for children. Cost is $5 per child. Hosted by NOVA's Novel Women and MIC. https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1411176705845098&tsid=0.1324506811797619&source=typeahead ABOUT THE BOOK In Laughing All the Way to the Mosque, Zarqa Nawaz introduces readers to her sometimes absurd, sometimes challenging experiences growing up as a Canadian of Muslim faith. It is an eye-opening, much-needed, and quite frankly, hysterically funny look at what it's like to straddle two cultures-and do so quite successfully. The book provides a different perspective of the female Muslim experience-normal, humorous, and positive. “This is the book of the summer…trust us you will cry from laughter.”— Canadian Living “Nawaz, mercifully, has a fatal weakness—irreverence. Praise be to Allah.”—Toronto Star “Her story will resonate with all independent-minded children of conservative immigrants, pulled between cultures and often falling foul of both.”—The Telegraph “A wry portrait of an immigrant daughter struggling against tradition, sexism, and the shalwar kameez.” —Maclean’s ABOUT THE AUTHOR Zarqa Nawaz created the world's first sitcom about a Muslim community living in the west. Little Mosque on the Prairie premiered to record ratings on the CBC in 2007. The show demystified Islam for millions of people around the world by explaining how practicing Muslims live their lives from dating to marriage to burying their dead. Now, Zarqa Nawaz has written her best selling comedic memoir, Laughing All the Way to the Mosque. Zarqa is also a frequent public speaker on Islam and comedy, gender and faith, and diversity in the media and has been featured in numerous outlets including The Huffington Post, CNN, NPR, Funny Or Die, BBC Radio 4, Lenny, NYT- Women in the World, and the Brian Lehrer Show.
