Dr. King's hope for equality was also expressed by our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who said in his final sermon: "All mankind is from Adam and Eve...a white (person) has no superiority over a black (person), nor does a black have any superiority over a white - except by piety and good action." Please join us with many other civil, community, and faith-based groups in this multi-cultural event. Let's take this opportunity to stand as a diverse, unified community and give back to the civil rights movement whose work we benefit from everyday.

0.0000UTK Siddiqi Lecture: Race, Islam, and the African Diaspora
Race, Islam, African Diaspora In His Lecture, Professor Curtis will address issues of global anti-black racism in the African Diaspora, with a focus on Islamic ritual practices that utilize ideas of Black/African identity. He will compare the practices of African American Muslims in the United States to those of the Ghawarna of Jordan, the Stambeli of Tunis, and the Siddis of Gujarat. An association between black identity and healing can be a powerful antidote to racism. Curtis argues, however, that if modern and reformist versions of Islam deny the Islamic authenticity of such practices, this may get in the way of racial healing.

0.0000On the Shoulders of Giants: Panel Discussion & Documentary Screening
We don't often think about Muslims in America when we imagine or re-imagine civil rights icons. Have African-American Muslims been erased from the discourse of civil rights? Were Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali anomalies, or were they representative of other modes of thinking about civil rights? While acknowledging the critical role of Christian religious leadership in spearheading the movement, is it possible to widen the lens through which we view the civil rights? Participants will view a 30-minute independently-produced documentary that draws on oral histories of Atlanta-based African-American Muslim leaders and activists followed by a panel discussion with prominent scholars in the Knoxville community.

The Muslim Community of Knoxville would like to invite you and your families to the city of Knoxville's annual MLK, Jr. Parade commemorating the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 16th. We will gather at Masjid Annoor at 8:30 AM and carpool to the parade no later than 9:00 AM which begins on Martin Luther King Avenue. The parade is approximately 2 miles long. Please ensure you are dressed warmly in case it's very cold. It is the civil rights laws that Dr. King and others gave their lives for in the 1960s that we regularly benefit from and use to practice our religion.

0.0000MCK in the MLK, Jr. Parade
The Muslim Community of Knoxville would like to invite you and your families to the city of Knoxville's annual MLK, Jr. Parade commemorating the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 18th.

0.0000'Freedom of Expression in Islam & the West' with Jonathan Brown presented by UT Religious Studies Department
Tuesday, October 27, 2015 7:00 p.m. James R. Cox Auditorium UT Alumni Memorial Building The Muslim Community of Knoxville cordially invites you to attend the University of Tennessee's 2nd annual Siddiqi Lecture* in Islamic Studies, sponsored by UT's Department of Religious Studies. This second lecture in the series will be given by Jonathan A. Brown, the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and Director of the Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim Christian Understanding. With controversies such as the protests calling for depictions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Texas and tragedies like the attack on the Charlie Hebdo satirical paper in Paris, much confusion surrounds the place of freedom of expression in Islam and Muslim societies. For Americans, seeking to understand these issues raises compelling questions about the issue of freedom of expression in our own culture. This lecture will address the question of the freedom of expression in the Islamic tradition and the West from both sides of this divide. *The Siddiqi Lecture in Islamic Studies was launched in 2014 to bring top scholars in the field of Islamic Studies to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and to foster a greater understanding of Islam in East Tennessee.
