0.0000Tazkiya Intensive with Shaykh Yasir Fahmy
Allah sent a messenger reciting His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom. Qur'an 3:164 This aya reveals that Tazkiya is the sacred duty of Prophethood, i.e, first purify the heart, then teach Qur'an and Sunnah to be implemented in the daily life of the believer. To those who seek to live Prophetically, the purification of the heart becomes a primary obligation. Some of the goals of Tazkiya are to identify and leave both inward and outward diseases of the heart, to acquire praiseworthy attributes and to qualitatively improve our practice of the Deen according to the Hadith of Jibril (AS). This one day course strives to provide students of knowledge with the foundation necessary for attaining Tazkiya. As Imam Muhammad al-Ghazali has said, " only through piety can good consequences be achieved and only the pious are rightly guided." This course is beneficial for students at all levels. Register at http://links.masboston.org/Tazkiya_Intensive $50, $35 subsidized/student tickets

0.0000The Inner & Outer Dimensions of Salah with Shaykh Yasir Fahmy
Salah is the defining act of the Believer. Allah (swt) attributed so much importance to this defining act of worship that He took the Prophet (SAW) to the highest position to give him Salah. The Prophet (SAW) has said, "The covenant that distinguishes between us and them (i.e., between believers and disbelievers) is Salah, and whoever neglects it has disbelieved." Should not we strive to perfect this most important act of worship, the one that is the first thing Allah will look at on the Day of Judgment, as our Beloved Prophet (SAW) has told us, "The first thing people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment is Prayer. Allah will say to His angels (even though He already knows), "Look at My servants' Prayers. Were they complete or not?' ". This course addresses this most essential pillars of our Deen, around which we organize our daily lives. Students will learn about the inner and outer dimensions of Salah to include how to attain "Khushoo", concentration and sincerity, and how to perform Salah correctly based on fiqh (legal rulings). This course is beneficial to students at all levels.

0.0000Film Screening: "Holding Ground: The Rebirth of Dudley Street"
Join us for film screenings and a discussion about the history of community organizing in Roxbury's Dudley neighborhood. Roxbury residents successfully organized in the 1970s and 80s and fought the City of Boston to push back against toxic and illegal dumping - and won. In the devastating aftermath of the Great Recession, they again came together to revitalize and rebuild their community. Date: Sunday, October 15, 2017 Time: 4:00-7:00pm Location: ISBCC 3rd Floor Function Hall - 100 Malcolm X Blvd, Roxbury 02120 Hosts: ISBCC, Neighbors for Neighbors, Reclaim Roxbury, Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) About the films: Holding Ground is at once a cautionary tale of urban policies gone wrong and a message of hope for all American cities. In 1985, African-American, Latino, Cape Verdean, and European-American residents in Roxbury, MA united to revitalize their community. The Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative went on to gain national recognition as residents fought to close down illegal dumps, gain unprecedented control of land from City Hall and create a comprehensive plan to rebuild the fabric of their community. Through the voices of committed residents, activists and city officials, this moving documentary shows how a Boston neighborhood was able to create and carry out its own agenda for change. Foreclosures. Unemployment. Childhood poverty. All these problems have hit American communities hard during the Great Recession. Gaining Ground, a follow-up to the award-winning documentary Holding Ground (1996), shows how one diverse Boston neighborhood has managed to stem the tide against enormous odds. Building on a 25-year legacy of innovative community organizing, a new generation of Dudley Street neighborhood leaders has managed to foster hope and create opportunity in challenging times. www.holdinggroundproductions.com Food will be served!

How do you know if they are the one with whom you can find the happiness and tranquility the Quran refers to? How do you avoid becoming another divorce statistic? This in-depth interactive workshop helps individuals thinking about marriage make informed decisions as they search for a life partner. Attendees will engage in self-awareness exercises that will enable them to recognize characteristics in potential partners that will complement their personalities, expectations, and future goals. 0.0000Friday Nights at the Mosque with Ustadha Janan Delgado
Lost in Translation: How we evaluate our actions and communicate their meaning to others On a daily basis, people of faith are asked to explain their religious practices to others who may see no sense in them. How then do we communicate the meaning of our actions to others? What language do we use? What kinds of assumptions and ideas do we participate in in these social exchanges? And how may language impact the way we understand ourselves and our faith? Janan Delgado is a PhD candidate in the Study of Religion at Harvard University. Prior to her doctoral work, Janan completed a MA in Near Eastern studies at NYU and a BA in Political Science at the American University in Cairo.

0.0000GBIO: Interfaith Gathering of Unity, Love, and Strength
The events of Charlottesville, VA have shaken us to the core. We grieve the loss of the dead and pray for the healing of the injured. We despair that today’s neo-nazis feel emboldened to spew hateful venom into the public square with impunity while wearing helmets, wielding shields, and brandishing weapons. We are confounded by all those those who are prone to violence and hatred. The moral fabric of our nation is frayed. We know that you need to do something. Many of you are desperate to be a part of the solution. You want to confront the evil, face it down, expose it to the light of day for what it is. We love you for this. We love you for your fierce anger and will to do good, to make a difference, to take a stand for God. Similar groups to those who visited hatred upon Charlottesville plan to hold a rally on the Boston Common on Saturday. We have had lengthy meetings with City officials and other inter-religious leaders, including colleagues in the Black community, Muslim community, and Jewish community. We ask you to investigate your own conscience and decide where you are called to be, to show up with love , act in nonviolence, and please prioritize the safety of yourself and others. The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization will host an Interfaith Gathering of Unity, Love, and Strength this Friday at 5pm, at Temple Israel of Boston. At GBIOs Spring Delegates Assembly in April, GBIO adopted the, "Out of Many, One" campaign to fight against threats to vulnerable communities. On Friday we will continue in the spirit of this campaign as we stand together as an organized powerful voice in Greater Boston. Whatever else you choose to do this weekend, we hope you will make this a high priority. We will hear inspiring words from faith leaders across Greater Boston, as we stand together against all forms of hatred, to affirm the power of love and righteousness. All members of clergy will be invited to stand together on the bima (raised platform), in full spiritual regalia. Then at 6pm, Temple Israel is inviting our interfaith community to join them for “A Sabbath of Love and Light,” a Shabbat worship experience open to all, devoted to the values of justice and compassion. Please extend this invitation to your family and friends. This is the time for us to be together with all who wish to counter messages of hatred by kindling the light of compassion and human dignity for all. We strongly encourage you to use public transportation to get to Temple Israel. We are located two blocks from the Longwood Station along the Green Line’s Riverside (D) route. We are two blocks from several bus routes that stop near Beth Israel/Deaconess Hospital and less than a mile from Coolidge Corner. Reduced rate parking is available at the 375 Longwood parking garage. Please arrive early to allow for additional time for security. We request that all bags be left at home.

The Annual Ramadan Iftar is an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of our beloved Messenger Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) and give generously. It is a time when we join together as family and community to seek Allah’s pleasure through collective giving. This year, we are also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the ISBCC minaret capping. As we use Ramadan’s blessings to be purified through our fasting and acts of worship, the Annual Ramadan Iftar is a special opportunity to give to support the House of Allah and be purified through our sadaqah (charity) for His sake. We are blessed to have Dr. Altaf Husain return again this year to carry out the fundraising. We will also have a special keynote address by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi.

0.0000Shama'il Class with Shaykh Yasir Fahmy
In this course, we will endeavor to learn about the characteristics and the etiquettes of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). We learn the Prophetic etiquette, his internal and external state, the way he looked, the way he walked, and the way he talked, all of which would be categorized under the Shama’il. The hope is that we learn in intimate detail who the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) was in his personal conduct and in his description so that we can emulate him to the best of our ability. The more intimate we know him (P.B.U.H.) then, God willing, we will be able to see him in our dreams and see him on the Day of Judgement and in the afterlife. The great practice of our scholars was to every year read the description of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.) in order to immerse themselves in his personal description. 0.0000Qalam Conference: "The Legacy of Ibrahim" at The ISBCC!
Through the Legacy of Ibrahim (a), personified as a flourishing tree (14: 24 – 25), we find that, to live a balanced life, one must have firm roots in faith, nurture familial values, and cultivate communal success. By Inculcating Abrahamic values: obedience to Allah (swt), love for family, and a dedication to people, we hope to improve both our lives in this world, as well as the hereafter.

0.0000Shaykh Umar Faruq Abd-Allah at The ISBCC!
Pre-modern cultures and civilizations were generally beautiful. This is especially but not uniquely true of pre-modern Islamic cultures and civilizations -- their visual arts, architecture, clothing, rugs, and other artifacts. On the other hand, modern cultures and civilizations struggle with the problem of ugliness. On occasion, ugliness becomes the norm. It is "real." Beauty is valued, but it is exotic and not normative. If you are fortunate, you go to a "beautiful" setting for vacation, but then have to return to the monotony, dullness, and ugliness of the world we live in. The one-day course, "Beauty, the Splendor of Truth: Timeless Universals and Time-Bound Modernisms" investigates this matter. In many traditional societies, it was believed that there is an intrinsic relation between God, truth, virtue (inward beauty), and outward beauty. In the modern world, by contrast, we often feel as though our understanding of reality vacillates between this objectivity of truth as understood by traditional peoples across the world for millennia, and the subjectivity of the self under the influence of the moral relativism of modernity. Meanwhile, beauty, virtue -- even truth itself -- hang in the imbalance. The individualistic and materialistic predispositions of modernity permeate our approach to art, architecture, music, culture, and economics. More gravely yet, it affects how the modern individual interprets himself. Modern man fulfills his purpose more faithfully the more he can paint the sacred with the colors of profanity, until the distinction between the two are sufficiently blurred as to strip both of any meaning. Beauty, however, is an entirely different matter. Though its experience may be subjective, its reality is objective, and it beckons to virtue, for it is the very splendor of truth! Sheikh's Bio: Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah (Wymann-Landgraf) is an American Muslim, born to a Protestant family in Columbus, Nebraska. He grew up in Athens, Georgia, where both of his parents taught at the University of Georgia. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Missouri with dual majors in history and English literature. In his last year there, he won a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship and entrance to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York to pursue a Ph.D. program in English literature. Shortly after coming to Cornell, Dr. Abd-Allah read The Autobiography of Malcolm X, which inspired him to embrace Islam. He subsequently altered his field of study and transferred to the University of Chicago, where he studied Arabic and Islamic studies and received his doctorate with honors for a dissertation on the origins of Islamic law, “Malik's Concept of ‘Amal in the Light of Maliki Legal Theory.” He taught at the University of Windsor (Ontario), Temple University, and the University of Michigan. He then went to Spain to teach Arabic in Granada. Two years later, he was appointed to the Department of Islamic Studies at King Abdul-Aziz University in Jeddah, where he taught Islamic studies and comparative religions for several years. During the time he spent in Jeddah, Dr. Abd-Allah was able to study with a number of traditional scholars. He then returned to the United States in 2000 under the auspices of the Nawawi Foundation (Chicago). He taught Islamic Studies at Darul Qasim Institute (Chicago) from 2012 to 2013. He is currently engaged in independent research, writing, and teaching activities with institutions across the United States, Europe, and Africa with a focus on Islamic theology. Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah has authored: A Muslim in Victorian America: The Life of Alexander Russell Webb (New York: Oxford University Press, 2006) Malik and Medina: Islamic Legal Reasoning in the Formative Period (Leiden: Brill, 2013) His published articles include: “Abu Hanifa,” in Encyclopaedia Iranica, 1:295-301. “Theological Dimensions of Islamic Law,” in The Cambridge Companion to Classical Islamic Theology(Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2008). “One God, Many Names” “Islam and the Cultural Imperative” “Living Islam with Purpose”
