The Islamic Center East Lansing, Haslett Community Church and the University Lutheran Church are pleased to host an informational presentation on “going solar”. Whether for a home-based project or a larger institutional system, photovoltaic panels provide renewable energy to advance us to a green future. This one-hour presentation will include information about recent photovoltaic installations in the greater Lansing area, names of current installers who are active in the area, and can install systems for $3/Watt or less. Attendees will learn how home-based systems are eligible for a 30% federal tax credit to help pay for the solar project. Refreshments will be provided. This series is organized by Solarize Meridian, the Green Teams of the Islamic Center East Lansing, Haslett Community Church, University Lutheran Church and Michigan Interfaith Power & Light. This is part of a campus/community scholar-led book discussion series which, through a variety of genres, we will engage with literature and each other on the persistent and pressing topics of racism, war, and genocide. This March 13th session will feature "This Muslim American Life: Dispatches from the War on Terror" by Moustafa Bayoumi which won the 2016 Evelyn Shakir Non-Fiction Arab American Book Award. This collection of essays addresses Muslim-American life and the War on Terror from a Muslim-American perspective. It will begin with a short lecture with Leila Tarakji, PhD candidate in the Department of English. Then, we'll break up into smaller groups for discussions of the book. This Feb. 22nd session will feature "The Arab of the Future" by award-winning French-Syrian cartoonist Riad Sattouf. This graphic memoir is about Sattouf's childhood growing up in France, Libya, and Syria in the 1970s and 80s. This book discussion event is part of the MSU Comics Forum. It will begin with a short lecture with Dr. Emine Evered, Associate Professor of History. Then, we'll break up into smaller groups for discussions of the book. Greetings friends, In our continuous effort to counter misinformation with proper information, I will be talking about Sharia in the Islam 101 class this Sunday. Please feel free to pass it along to anyone who might be interested in it and might benefit from it. Description below and accompanying graphic attached. ---------------------------------- The Islam 101 class is offered on the first Sunday of every month. In this session, Imam Sohail Chaudhry will talk about Sharia. There are many misconceptions about what sharia is and if it is compatible with the society we live in and is it all about laws and punishments etc. Deliberate misinformation by some vested interest groups have resulted in some people falsely believing that Muslims seek to impose Sharia law in the U.S. Come and find out more about this topic and ask any question you may have about this topic no matter how sensitive it may be. The lecture will be offered in a casual setting, where everyone if welcome and questions are encouraged ! Please extend this invitation to anyone who can benefit from this talk and get an opportunity to ask any questions in a friendly setting. No prior class attendance is necessary.

You are invited to an ISPU Panel Presentation at the Islamic Center of East Lansing - 8:00 pm to 9:15 pm, Saturday, March 26 ISPU and the Islamic Center of East Lansing will be co-hosting a panel to discuss race relations within the American Muslim community. Panelists: Mark Crain, DREAM of Detroit Namira Islam, Executive Director of Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative (Muslim-ARC) Sarrah Buageila, ISPU Project Manager This panel discussion will be answering the following questions: 1. How can predominantly South Asian and Arab American Mosques promote a greater understanding of race, civil rights, and create inclusive environments for other ethnicities within their congregations? 2. How can we successfully build intra-mosque relationships and collaboration? 3. What practices have the panelists seen that creates positive community cohesion? ISPU will be releasing a five part report on meeting the needs of underserved American Muslim youth, including African-American Muslim youth. Sarrah Buageila from ISPU will be presenting the recommendations from the report, while Mark and Namira would be facilitating the discussion.
