As we organize and prepare for the banquet — the social event of the year for the Muslim community of the Greater Delaware Valley — we are keenly aware that this is no ordinary time for American Muslims. The past year witnessed the widespread vilification of the Muslim community and Islam. More challenges will certainly arise when the new administration takes over in Washington on January 20th.
Taking into account the rapid rise of Islamophobia during and after the presidential election, the theme of our 2017 banquet is “Revelation and Resistance.” These words describe the two foundations of the Muslim community as we confront an uncertain future: 1) A belief in God’s Revelation of the Quran; and 2) An affirmation of the centrality of justice as the preeminent organizing principle of society.
To inspire us in these anxious times, the banquet’s keynote address will be delivered by Muslim community activist Linda Sarsour. Linda is an award-winning racial justice and civil rights activist and social media maverick. She is the Executive Director of the Arab American Association of New York, has spoken dozens of times at events around the country, and been interviewed on countless TV, radio, and print media outlets.
Let it not be said, however, that Muslims do not know how to have a good time and laugh, even in this time of turmoil. And laugh you will, with banquet entertainment provided by nationally-known comedian Amer Zahr.
And as in years past, there is ample opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones, visit our sponsors’ vending tables for various products and services, and enjoy the entertaining and inspiring evening program. And there is even an special program for the kids called “Mad Science.”
Finally, CAIR-Philadelphia would not have the resources to do all the work we do for the Muslim community without your spiritual and financial support – for which we thank you wholeheartedly.
