CAIR-Philadelphia 12th Annual Banquet

TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT! CAIR-Philadelphia Presents: "Defending Our Freedom - Living Our Faith" 12th Annual Banquet Featuring Dalia Mogahed, Zahra Billoo, and Mo Amer Children's entertainment by Mad Science and a book reading/puppet session by Gulmakai Saleh Dear Friends and Supporters of CAIR-Philadelphia, As-salaamu Alaikum, As 2018 dawns, it is once again time to invite you to CAIR-Philadelphia’s Annual Banquet; this year will be our 12th! CAIR-Philadelphia’s banquet has become the social event of the year for the rapidly expanding Muslim community of the Greater Delaware Valley. It is a time to meet old friends and make new acquaintances; a time to be inspired; and a time to support the work of CAIR-Philadelphia at this crucial moment in the life of our community and in the history of our country. Past speakers at our banquets have included such scholars, luminaries, and public officials as Sheikh Zaid Shakir, Imam Suhaib Webb, activist Linda Sarsour, Governors Tom Wolf and Ed Rendell, and Mayor Michael Nutter. This year’s banquet promises to be another stellar event, with keynote speaker Dalia Mogahed (Muslim scholar, author, and activist), entertainer Mo Amer (Palestinian-American comedian), and all the way from California, our Mistress of Ceremonies, Zahra Billoo (Executive Director of the Bay Area Chapter of CAIR and civil rights attorney). There will also be another dramatic multimedia production from our in-house impresario Jacob Bender, and for the kids, “Mad Science” returns with a whole new show. These are no ordinary times for the American Muslim community: what with Muslim travel bans and talk of Muslim registries; the eruption of widespread Islamophobia in print, on broadcast media, and throughout the internet; the startling increase of anti-Muslim hate crimes across the country; and as 2017 ended, the egregious American endorsement of Israel’s unilateral and illegal actions in Jerusalem. And most shocking of all, a divisive anti-Muslim campaign of fear-mongering and stereotyping, sadly led by the highest official in the land. In this blighted American landscape, now more than ever, CAIR is an irreplaceable and indispensable address for the American Muslim community, offering free legal assistance for Muslims in need of civil rights representation, enhancing the understanding of Islam, empowering American Muslims, and building coalitions that promote justice and peace. Last year, CAIR-Philadelphia’s banquet was a sold-out affair with many turned away at the door. To guarantee seats for your family, buy tickets today. If you are a business or individual with an interest in marketing your products or services to the Muslim population of the Greater Delaware Valley, consider sponsoring this event by advertising in our Annual Report (which will be distributed to hundreds of attendees) or reserving a vending table. (Visit http://pa.cair.com/banquet/sponsor/ for more information.) We look forward to seeing you on March 10th, 2018 at the beautiful Springfield Country Club in Springfield, PA.

Lancaster Dreams BIG

On March 4th, the eve of the Trump administration's scheduled cancellation of the DACA program, our community will join together to affirm Lancaster's deeply rooted values of diversity, inclusion, and community. Since 2012, DACA has provided legal status and basic rights to hundreds of thousands of American youth, who have come to be known as "Dreamers". Dreamers are our neighbors, students, co-workers, family members, and friends. They are integral to our community, and in this time of legal and political uncertainty we must come together to extend to them hospitality and mutual aid. When our leaders fail to lead, the people must stand up and come together. Together, we can dream BIG. When we do this, we are the true leaders of our community. This family friendly, non-partisan event will include speakers, artistic performances, and opportunities for the community to learn about the many initiatives taking place in Lancaster that support Dreamers and the many immigrants who have made Lancaster their home.

Garry Wills has established himself as an authority on religion, American politics, and how they intersect. The Qur’an is sacred to roughly 1.6 billion people. After a lifetime spent thinking and writing about Christianity, Wills felt compelled both personally and professionally to read the Qur’an in order to better understand the world around him. Tickets are $29 and are available online at the Parish Resource Center or by calling them at 717-299-1113. Please opt for the Parish Resource Center member price of $29 and select Saint James in the member dropdown menu on the payment site. Lancaster Welcomes: A Celebration of Immigrants & Refugees

On May 1st Lancaster will affirm our values of compassion, diversity, and respect, as we stand together as a united community. Some of us have lived here for generations, while others are newcomers. From many lands, with myriad stories of how we arrived here, together, we are Lancaster. We value every single person here in our community. On Monday, May 1st, we will gather in Penn Square, at 6:30pm, as part of a national day of action. We will celebrate our community and declare our shared values of hospitality, love, and solidarity that connect us to each other, and call us to stand with the most vulnerable among us. There will be music and community speakers. Please join us. We will not be silent in the face of the increasing negative rhetoric that is being leveled at immigrants and refugees across our country. We will not sit idly by as those Lancastrians who are undocumented face an unprecedented level of persecution by our government. Lancaster Stands Up to affirm, support, and protect our immigrants and refugee brothers and sisters. We are raising our children together, and we are each other's co-workers, friends, and neighbors. We are our sister's and brother's keeper. Together we are building a vibrant, beautiful community. We are all Lancastrians. Sponsored by: Lancaster Stands Up, Church World Service, Citizens Immigration and Refugee Action Committee, CASA in Action, Lancaster Interfaith Coalition, Lancaster Council of Churches, Franklin and Marshall Mi Gente Latina, I.M.P.A.C.T.

Join us on for a dialogue on diversity and providing support

Dear SAAL Community Members, Unfortunately, the past few years have seen a troubling increase in hate crimes and hate speech in our nation. Also, there has been increasing angst and confusion within the general population regarding immigration. As members of a minority (recently immigrated) population, we have the potential to be targeted in such situations. As a multicultural organization that values the importance of American ideals of freedom and tolerance, SAAL is keenly aware of the importance of creating and fostering understanding within our community organizations and residents. Simply through our ancestry, we need to be engaged exemplar ambassadors of cultural diversity. You can play key roles in your daily lives, helping to improve understanding and build bridges between people. Your efforts can help prevent bullying in all forms, including hate crimes and hate speech. SAAL is also committed in assisting our schools in any form in cultivating such civic behavior amongst our children. There are already multiple local “Diversity” events that promote compassion, understanding, and tolerance. We encourage you to actively participate in these events. You play key roles in helping improve understanding and build bridges between people. Join us on March 25th for a dialogue on diversity and providing support, resources for our community. Regards SAAL Executive Committee

Revelation and Resistance - 11th Annual Banquet

As-salamu alaikum! Saturday, March 11, 2017 is the date of CAIR-Philadelphia’s Eleventh Annual Banquet, which will again take place at the beautiful Springfield Country Club. RESERVE YOUR TICKETS TODAY! As we organize and prepare for the banquet — the social event of the year for the Muslim community of the Greater Delaware Valley — we are keenly aware that this is no ordinary time for American Muslims. The past year witnessed the widespread vilification of the Muslim community and Islam. More challenges will certainly arise when the new administration takes over in Washington on January 20th. Taking into account the rapid rise of Islamophobia during and after the presidential election, the theme of our 2017 banquet is “Revelation and Resistance.” These words describe the two foundations of the Muslim community as we confront an uncertain future: 1) A belief in God’s Revelation of the Quran; and 2) An affirmation of the centrality of justice as the preeminent organizing principle of society. To inspire us in these anxious times, the banquet’s keynote address will be delivered by Muslim community activist Linda Sarsour. Linda is an award-winning racial justice and civil rights activist and social media maverick. She is the Executive Director of the Arab American Association of New York, has spoken dozens of times at events around the country, and been interviewed on countless TV, radio, and print media outlets. Let it not be said, however, that Muslims do not know how to have a good time and laugh, even in this time of turmoil. And laugh you will, with banquet entertainment provided by nationally-known comedian Amer Zahr. And as in years past, there is ample opportunity to meet old friends, make new ones, visit our sponsors’ vending tables for various products and services, and enjoy the entertaining and inspiring evening program. And there is even an special program for the kids called “Mad Science.” Finally, CAIR-Philadelphia would not have the resources to do all the work we do for the Muslim community without your spiritual and financial support – for which we thank you wholeheartedly. See you all on March 11th, 2017 in Springfield!

Vigil: Immigrants and Refugees Welcome Here

Our country is in crisis. At this time, immigrants are being detained and denied admission due to Donald Trump's executive orders banning travel into this country from certain countries. Thousands of people who hoped to immigrate, seek refuge, or travel for business/studies/ family reunification in this country may no longer be able to. Undocumented immigrants are also under threat as Trump signed an order promising consequences for cities and individuals who help undocumented residents and is threatening to take away some of their legal options. Local undocumented residents and refugees need our support more than ever in these uncertain times. #LancasterStandsUp, together with CWS - Lancaster Immigration & Refugee Program and Keystone Progress Education Fund, and Lancaster Interfaith Coalition, are calling for a candlelight vigil this Tuesday evening at 5:45pm, in which we will honor our area's proud, welcoming stance for refugees. We resist hate and still stand in strong support of the rights of undocumented persons in our community. We will hold those who are locked out of the U.S., or stuck in violent or wartorn countries or refugee camps, or living under constant fear of deportation or their families being torn apart in our thoughts and in our hearts. We will call for our elected representatives, including Lloyd Smucker and Scott Martin, to stand up for our local values, and the rights of immigrant and refugees. Also, a reminder: Concert for Refugees is this Sunday. Please come out and support that vitally important local effort.

Quran Khwani for Isaal-e-Thawab of Sayeeda Begum

As-Salāmu `Alaykum (السلام عليكم) Sr. Sayeeda Begum mother of Br. Rehan Sibgatullah passed away peacefully while visiting India. On this solemn occasion we offer our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the family. May Allah (s.w.t.) grant the entire family mercy (Rahmah), patience (Sabr) and comfort during this difficult and trying time. We also pray for the soul and ask Allah (s.w,t.) to expand and enlighten her grave with His Noor (Light) and grant highest place in Jannathul-Firdous (paradise), Ameen. إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ There will be Quran Khwani for Isaal-e-Thawab this Sunday, Dec. 11th, 2016 starting at 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm (Zuhr to Maghrib prayer) at the Islamic Community Center of Lancaster (275 Hess Blvd, Lancaster, PA 17601). There will be a special Du'a and dinner will be be served, insha-Allah. Please spread the word and make every attempt to attend. If you are not able to attend then please make Dua'a for the deceased sister and Sabr (patience) for family. جزاكم الله خيراً ---- Reciting Qur'an for the Deceased. Transmitting Rewards By Mufti Ebrahim Desai Q.) 1) What is the Islamic justification of the assumption that Quran Khawani for a deceased person benefits that person? Is there evidence of this practice during the life of the Holy Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam? If not, why is it not a bid'at? How can this benefit the deceased person in the light of Q2 below? 2) What is the meaning of Isaal-e-Thawab? I have come across a hadith that read (paraphrased): After death only three things can benefit a person: 1) sadaqa 2) knowledge that he spread, 3) children who pray for him. What makes us believe that there are other ways to benefit the person who has deceased through Isaal-e-Thawaab? [Muhammad Basit] A.) 1) Ref. below 2. Isaal-e-Sawaab (to perform a virtuous act and grant the reward to any person, alive or deceased) is permissible. On numerous occasions, Nabi, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, advised the Sahabah, Radi-Allahu anhum, to give charity on behalf of the deceased. One specific incident is of Sayyidna Abu Talha, Radi-Allahu Anhu, when the Ayah, ‘You cannot attain virtue until your spend what is beloved to you…’ (Nisaa 4). Abu Talha gave his most valuable well and garden, Bi’r Haa as charity on behalf of his deceased mother. In fact, Rasulullah, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, slaughtered 100 sheep during his farewell Hajj and made intention for himself and all those (alive, deceased and to come) who bring faith on his prophethood. (Nasbur Raaya, Allama Zailee) Almighty Allah Taãla states in the Noble Qurãn, 'O` you who believe! Obey Allah and His Rasul.' The life of the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, is indeed the best example for us to follow. During the time of the Prophet, Sall-Allahu alayhi wa sallam, many of his family members, his wives, daughters, uncles and his illustrious companions left the world whilst engaged in the most noble work and effort of uplifting the religion of Islam. Despite the Prophet's deep love for them, he did not (on any single occasion) commemorate the innovative custom of inviting people on different intervals to recite the Qur’aan for Isaal-e-Sawaab. While we do believe in Isaal-e-Sawaab, however, the act of inviting people for Qur’an Khatam and Dhikr, etc. has taken much prominence and people regard it as compulsory. In principle, if any permissible act is regarded as compulsory in Shar'iah it becomes Bid’at as that is distortion of Deen. Concerned and beloved ones should recite Qur’an or perform any act of virtue, i.e. give charity, etc. with sincerity and gift it to the deceased. That is closer to the Sunnah and more beneficial to the deceased than performing an act of Bid’at which is of no benefit to the deceased, thus, defeating the actual purpose. And Allah Taãla Knows Best.

UN World Water Day: Conserve this Precious Source

UN World Water Day: Conserve this Precious Source We would like to invite and encourage each and every one to be a part of saving the environment . After Flint, we realize the value of clean water and we should all make some, even a minuscule effort, to preserve this precious gift from God for the next generation. Let us all join hands for this cause that will benefit humanity at large. We appreciate your effort to spread the word. Thank you ---- Peace be on you all! In a famous Hadith, Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said, "Men are co-owners in three things: water, fire and pastures.” (Ahmed, ibn Maja) Don't you think we are all then equally responsible for conserving and preserving this great bounty that our Creator has given us? March 22 is the U.N World Water Day, a day set apart for focusing attention on the importance of fresh water and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. In keeping with the spirit of the day, the Muslim Community of Central Pennsylvania encourages every family reading this message to make a commitment to save a gallon of water every day. There are many simple, practical ways of doing this. Here are some every member of your family can try: 1. Check faucets and pipes for leaks 2. Check your toilets for leaks. Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. 3. Long hot showers can use five to ten gallons every unneeded minute. Limit your showers to the time it takes to soap up, wash down and rinse off. 4. Put plastic bottles or float booster in your toilet tank to cut down on water waste, put an inch or two of sand or pebbles inside each of two plastic bottles to weigh them down. Fill the bottles with water, screw the lids on, and put them in your toilet tank, safely away from the operating mechanisms. Or, buy an inexpensive tank bank or float booster. 5.Take shorter showers. One way to cut down on water use is to turn off the shower after soaping up, then turn it back on to rinse. A four-minute shower uses approximately 20 to 40 gallons of water. 6. Turn off the water after you wet your toothbrush. 7. Use your dishwasher and clothes washer for only full loads Automatic dishwashers and clothes washers should be fully loaded for optimum water conservation. 8. Minimize use of kitchen sink garbage disposal units. 9. Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. 10. Don't run the hose while cleaning your car. Use the hose only for rinsing - this simple practice can save as much as 150 gallons when washing a car. Water conservation comes naturally when everyone in the family is aware of its importance. Use World Water Day 2016 as an opportunity to educate yourself and your family to conserve this precious resource!! #Water, #Prophet, #UN, #WaterDay #preserve
