Our special guest, Noor Tagouri, will be joining us the afternoon of April 1st as she shares a universally powerful message of acceptance and embracing individuality in a multi-cultural society. Biography: Noor is a first-generation Libyan American and on-air journalist for Newsy with a social media following rapidly approaching one million. Since launching the viral #letnoorshine campaign in 2012, she has gained international attention, including a history-making appearance in the October 2016 “Renegades” issue of Playboy, in which she was the first woman ever within its pages to wear a hijab. Noor has achieved game-changing breakthroughs on her journey to become the first hijabi journalist on commercial U.S. television, along the way establishing a strong platform to empower others to break normative stereotypes and realize their own potential in a multi-cultural society. Her passion for storytelling stems from a desire to expose cultural injustices and combat challenges women face globally. As she continues to break barriers with gusto, Noor inspires audiences to pursue their passions, stay true to their identity, embrace their differences, and let their light shine. This event is FREE and open to the public

0.0000The "Our America" Unity Rally
As many are aware, the recent Executive order signed by President Trump, commonly referred to as the ‘Muslim Ban’, has gone into effect. Right at this moment, citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Somalia, and Yemen have been completely barred from entering the United States. Additionally, refugees from these nations are now forbidden entry into the U.S, meaning that those who seek to flee the horrors of war will find the doors of America closed. The UNC MSA will be organizing a rally, with the support of the Chancellor's office and the Union Board of Directors as well as organizations such as BSM, CHispA, Young Dems, CAGE, OASIS, Campus Y, American Indian Center, NCSU MSA, Duke MSA, Feminist Students United, Sangam, MADO and SAGA, to take place on Friday, February 3rd, where we will make our stance against the Muslim Ban. We invite all members of the broader community, Muslim and non-Muslim, to join us in this event, in opposition to this measure. We will have speakers and representatives from various groups from all over the triangle followed by Maghrib (sunset) prayer. Peace be Unto You All.

0.0000Art and Welcoming Night
Join MSA and the LGBTQ Center for a night of mingling, art, spoken word, and reflection. We hope to create a space that will allow us to get to know one another and the many components that shape our identity. We also hope to support artists from our communities whose art will be displayed in a silent auction. This event offers a space for deep reflection on recent events that have spawned divisive rhetoric throughout our country, pitting two marginalized groups against each other. The space we aim to achieve is one that offers inclusive, constructive dialogue that dismantles notions of disunity. That includes being willing to lean into discomfort, allowing yourself to be vulnerable by relaying your experiences, thoughts, and questions. It's our hope that this space will be one that is conducive to fruitful discussion and free of criticism During the summer, a vigil was held for the victims of the Orlando shootings. Many of us weren't on campus to pay respect to the victims with our fellow students. We will use a portion of the night to have a moment of silence and dedicate time for students to pray or hold intention. Dinner will be provided from Med Deli. 0.0000UNC MSA Fast-a-thon with Hari Kondabolu
Fast-A-Thon is an event held on university campuses across North America by many university Muslim Student Associations as a way for people to experience the beauty of the Islamic fast and also donate to an incredible charity. Fasting is not required, however attendees have the opportunity to fast from sunrise to sunset, and then join us for a meal and discussion about how fasting helps us experience not only hunger but a certain understanding of our faith and our journey towards God. A short discussion will be led by Imam Abutaleb. The UNC Muslim Students Association holds Fast-a-thon as an annual semi-formal banquet with the goal to create awareness about underlying determinants of hunger, discrimination, systematic violence, and the intricacies of the Islamic faith tradition. All proceeds collected from tickets sales and individual donations will go to our two sponsored charities selected by UNC MSA’s executive board. The organizations were chosen primarily for their goals to ensure the dignity and inalienable rights of human beings. This year we decided to split donations between a domestic and international organization, the Compass Center and Mercy USA’s relief efforts for Burmese refugees. For our main speaker this year we are bringing the notable comedian Hari Kondabolu. Kondabolu has been featured on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, David Letterman, and Comedy Central. Kondabolu's ability to navigate the nuance and hilarity of the American minority experience will ensure that we all have a great night together after a day of fasting! Ticket Sales: Due Paying Menbers: $10 Non-Due Paying Members $15 At the Door EVERYONE: $18 Tickets can be purchased through the Union box office at the link below or at the pit: http://tinyurl.com/njr4noh

0.0000Islamophobia Teach-in Series #4: The Struggle of Jihad with AbdelRahman Murphy
The Islamophobia Teach-In Series was created by UNC MSA and UNC MONSOON as a way to heal and educate the UNC community after the events of February 10th. The series is focused on dismantling Islamophobia, from its financial roots and the commonly held prejudices perpetuated by the media and politics. Please join AbdelRahman Murphy in discussing the misappropriation of the Islamic concept of jihad. Murphy will focus on how these misconceptions perpeturate Islamophobia and the criminalization of Muslim identities. Also, Murphy will detail how Muslims experience and understand the term jihad as a nuanced struggle in their faith in an introspective and extrospective manner. This lecture is sponsored by UNC MSA, UNC MONSOON, Carolina Center for the Middle East and Muslim Civilization, and the Carolina Asia Center.
