By some accounts, Rumi’s poetry has become the most popular poetry in the English language. Much lesser known, however, is the legacy of the concept of Radical Love (‘Eshq) in Islamic thought and the poetry inspired by it that shines through Rumi, Hafez, ‘Attar, Ahmad Ghazali, and many other Muslim sages.
This talk will serve to introduce the audience to the “path of radical love” (mazhab-e ‘eshq), a powerful current of mysticism in Islam that begins with a bold claim: There is, ultimately, One Love. It is this Radical Love which brings together humanity and divinity through a mystically powerful cosmic current. This talk by Professor Safi, the Director of Islamic Studies at Duke University, will also serve as an introduction to how to read Rumi as a Muslim sage.
Following the talk, join us for a lively on-stage conversation with Professor Safi and the Bay Area's own Feraidoon Mojadedi. See our selection of books on Rumi at the Zaytuna College Bookstore. External Event Url
