Polygyny in the Black Muslim Community

Dr. Debra Majeed will be sharing the major findings from her book 'Polygyny: What It Means When African American Muslim Women Share Their Husbands'. It represents over 10 years of national research on multiple marriage in the Black Muslim community. This book features the voices of women who welcome polygyny, oppose it, acquiesce to it, or even negotiate power in its practices. Majeed examines the choices available to African American Muslim women who are considering polygyny or who are living it. She calls attention to the ways in which interpretations of Islam’s primary sources are authorized or legitimated to regulate the rights of Muslim women. Highlighting the legal, emotional, and communal implications of polygyny, Majeed encourages Muslim communities to develop formal measures that ensure the welfare of women and children who are otherwise not recognized by the state. Inshallah, this free community lecture and discussion will be rich and meaningful for all who attend. Saturday April 30, 2016 6:00pm - 8:00pm Location: United Muslim Islamic Center 1251 Point Breeze Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19146 *co-sponsored by Muslim Wellness Foundation, Inc. *Books will be available for sale. $30

Good Health, Good Life: Health & Wellness Fair

From an Islamic perspective health is viewed as one of the greatest blessings that God has bestowed on mankind. Islam encourages Muslims to strive for balance and moderation in all aspects of behavior, including diet, health and exercise. ~~ Prophet Muhammad (saw) has said: “Take benefit of five before five: your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free-time before your preoccupation, and your life before your death" ~~ Unfortunately, many in our community suffer from preventable illnesses or do not have the necessary health coverage to cover medical costs and life-saving treatments. If you are having difficulty finding health care coverage, have questions about mental and physical health or how to get covered, join us for this workshop!
