Shaykh Faraz Khan

Shaykh Faraz A. Khan, has spent the last several years studying and teaching traditional Islamic sciences, with a focus on Hanafi jurisprudence, Hadith studies and methodology, theology, logic, and Arabic grammar. One of his main inspirations in seeking knowledge was the English rendition of Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali's "Heirs of the Prophets," translated by our beloved Imam Zaid Shakir. Shaykh Faraz was particularly moved by the chapters discussing the immense virtue of sacred knowledge; the prayers for scholars by creation, including even ants in their burrows and fish in the sea; and the weeping of the heavens and earth at the death of scholars. In 2004 Shaykh Faraz moved to Amman, Jordan. Since then, he has been honored to sit at the feet of many eminent scholars. His teachers include Shaykh Ahmad al-Jammal, Shaykh Abdul Qadir al-Ani (Allah have mercy on him), Shaykh Akram Abdul Wahhab, Dr. Ashraf Muneeb, Dr. Salah Abu ’l-Hajj, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, Shaykh Bilal Najjar, Shaykh Hamza al-Bakri, and Shaykh Naeem Abdul Wali. Shaykh Faraz also translated and annotated the classical Hanafi primer Ascent to Felicity (Maraqi ‘l-Sa`adat) by Imam Shurunbulali [published by White Thread Press, 2010], which Shaykh Faraz Rabbani has described as “the best mid-sized manual of Hanafi fiqh available in English. Highly recommended.” Shaykh Faraz also a full-time faculty member and the Honor’s Program coordinator at Zaytuna College. He is a faculty member and researcher for Seekersguidance, and has translated into English classical Arabic texts in Hanafi jurisprudence, Ash`ari and Maturidi theology, and logic. Courses: Theology Logic Prophetic Biography Selected Works and Achievements: Ascent to Felicity (Maraqi ’l-Sa`adat, Shurunbulali), White Thread Press, 2010 [published translation with annotation] Nahlawi’s Uncovered Pearls of the Lawful and Prohibited [forthcoming translation with annotation, God-willing] Sanusi’s Creed: The Matrix of Demonstrative Proofs (Umm al-Barahin) [unpublished translation with annotation] Nur al-Din Sabuni’s Prolegomenon of the Foundations of the Religion (Al-Bidaya fi Usul al-Din) [unpublished translation] Abhari’s Primer in Logic (Isagoge) [unpublished translation with annotation] Education: Diplomas in Traditional Islamic Studies, Markaz Anwar al-Ulema, Amman, 2008-2011 Traditional Islamic Studies, Amman, 2005-2011 Classical Arabic Program, Qasid Institute, Amman, 2004-2005 BA, Biology, University of Texas, Austin, 2000. STOP THE VIOLENCE IN OUR STREETS

Islam as a religion has a beautiful history in the Americas. It is a history that has been forged in the flame of struggle against oppression and inequality. This history gave rise to figures such as Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali whose courage and dignity help give voice to the freedom struggles of the 60s and 70s. Beginning with the work of many unorthodox Islamic movements like the Nation of Islam and the Moorish Science Temple and later through more traditional groups like the Darul Islam and the Islamic Party inner-city folk saw Islam and Muslims as workers for freedom and justice. That is why many urban-folks would support Muslim businesses and publications and began giving their children Muslim names. This was the Dawah of the past—giving people hope that life could be better—and that Dawah was strangely effective. Somehow the Muslims began to abandon the freedom struggle of the past which left the community searching for new direction. This confusion led many to fall into 1 of 2 varying camps—the assimilationist and the separationist. The first is made up mostly of more affluent professionals that are out to tout how “American” the Muslim community in America is (or should be). They will often have open houses to invite non-Muslims in to learn about Islam. The imams that give sermons on Friday speak perfect English and Arabic and the mosques often encourage their members to be politically active and vote in both state and national elections. This stems from a feeling that Muslims should be part of the American fabric and not sheltered or secluded from American society. The Muslims should roll up their sleeves and put in the hard work that will help them earn the respect of their fellow countrymen. Some complain that this attempt at assimilation may lead to appeasement and apology when Islamic principles do not fall in line with the overall US agenda on issues like US foreign policy, immigration and police violence. When concerned young Muslims ask these questions someone is sure to highlight Islamic teachings that reference principles like compassion, understanding, harmony and love thy neighbor. Implying that when things do not go the Muslims’ way in the world the believer should take the high road and in a turn the other cheek fashion—never seeking to question what kind of society one seeking to join?

TEARS OF THE YEARNERS FOR THE MEETING WITH GOD

About the text This booklet is a translation of one chapter from Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali’s book Lata’if al – Ma’arif fi ma li Mawasim al – ‘Am min al – Waza’if (Subtle Realizations of the Spiritual Protocols of the Seasons). It is the chapter entitled, “Khitam al-‘Am” (The Year’s End), wherein the author speaks about the best way to end one’s year of worship. The chapter focuses on the question of the preparation for death and whether or not it is lawful to wish for death; if lawful, under what conditions can a Muslim wish for death and when must he/she not? Ibn Rajab makes an excellent choice of Qur’anic verses, hadiths, wise quotes, and poetic verses to help the reader comprehend the gravity of death, the goal of living, and the perquisites and perils of the Afterlife. It is a chapter which realizes the Arab proverb, “The best speech is short and clear” (khayr al-kalam ma qalla wa dalla). I entitled the translation of this chapter, Tears of the Yearners for the Meeting with God (Dumu’ al-Mushtaqin ila Liqa’ Rabb al-‘Alamin) or simply Tears of the Yearners . The reason for the title is that throughout the chapter, Ibn Rajab showcases many luminaries who cried while on their deathbeds out of a yearning and readiness to meet God. For example, “[Ibrahim] al-Nakha’i cried at the moment of his death…” “Hasan al-Basri cried upon his death…” “Habib al-‘Ajami would cry when he was dying…” Reports of this nature throughout the chapter were so numerous that one could not ignore them. Rather, one is even made to feel that crying at the time of one’s death out of longing to meet God is a tradition of the sages and something towards which any dying person should aspire, if this state does not come to one naturally.
