Among Western general public Sufism has often been confused with mystical traditions of the Far East, and thus it was considered as an independent religion without ties to Islam. However, the term Sufism has widely been defined in the literature as the Islamic mysticism that prescribes for salvation a true love of God which could only be generated by ma'rifa (gnosis), knowing God properly.
