Jews and Muslims: Intimate Strangers

The Temple, ISB Atlanta, Roswell Community Masjid and Atlanta Masjid of Al Islam invite you to their event, Jews and Muslims: Intimate Strangers. This series offers an opportunity to examine our own knowledge and misconceptions as well as a chance to deepen our senses of self, better understand each other, and further enable meaningful conversation between our Muslim and Jewish communities. We ask that all participants engage with open hearts and minds and respectful intentions. Jews and Muslims are seen as the archetype of enemies in endless conflict, a perception made of misunderstandings and omissions. Yet history shows us that the conflict and tension is quite recent, a mere 150 years. By traveling back to the time of Muhammad and then forward to present day, the goal of this balanced and well-researched series is to lay out the facts and deconstruct historical misbeliefs. Poverty Simulation at RCM

On August 26th at 2pm RCM will be hosting a Team Building Exercise that is one of a kind, A Poverty Simulation! Why a Poverty Simulation? Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. CAPS exists to: Promote Poverty Awareness During the simulation, role-play a month in poverty and experience low-income families' lives. Increase Understanding After the simulation, you will unpack your learning and brainstorm community change. Inspire Local Change Together, you can be a voice to end poverty in your family, friends and community. Ramadan Food Drive

AA As we abstain from food during the daylight hours of Ramadan, let us use our efforts to feed those in our own neighborhood that have no choice but to go without food daily. North Fulton Community Charities feeds over 100 famlies DAILY. This organization is not even 5 minutes from our masjid and we have so many in need. 1 out of 10 families are homeless and summer is crucial when children are not in school. So help us fill the barrels consistently through the month with non-perishable foods (Food Cans/ Cereals/ Noodles/ Soups etc). There are 4 boxes for our four teams... we need to keep all four overflowing all month long IA. These boxes will be delivered to NFCC regulary. Let us make a difference!

Straight Talk for Middle School and High School Students

Calling all middle and high school students! (no parents please).. Join us for this important session hosted by Br Faraz Iqbal representing the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Atlanta at RCM and let's build up our self confidence and positivity! Straight Talk is a youth workshop designed to help Middle School and High School students meet the challenges of maintaining their Muslim identity in today’s climate. Students today are faced with stereotypical comments in school, as well as outside of school, particularly in the media. They face challenges to their identity as Muslims and their self esteem. A low self esteem may have many effects including stress and poor preformance. In this workshop youth will be provided a venue where they can share what they are facing in the current environment. Areas of focus in this first workshop are as follows: 1) Talk about self-esteem: to understand what it is and how it is impacted. At the beginning of this workshop the audience will take a self-esteem survey. This survey will help ISB understand how the Muslim youth fare when it comes to self-esteem in different communities. 2) Developing friends and being an influencer: The concepts here come from Dale Carnegie’s book, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” The workshop goes over the 6 concepts that youth can implement to develop their friendships and be a positive influencer. 3) Discuss how the Islamic faith teaches Muslims to be tolerant of other faiths and backgrounds showing specific examples. This is to show the youth that the stereo-types and negative comments are often misconceptions. 4) Role playing scenarios. Here the audience will be split into different groups where they will be assigned a role play (a topic related to maintaining your identity). The objective is to hear how the youth would respond to those scenarios and coach them on the optimal way to handle the situation (based on what was discussed in the workshop). At the end of workshop, the audience should walk away with a toolkit on how to maintain their identity as well as enable youth to become positive influencers in their respective social circles.

Anger Management Seminar

This workshop is presented by Aysha Siddiqui, who is a Board Certified Anger Management Specialist (CAMS), a Certified Life Coach and Psychologist. She works with families, groups, individuals to find a balance in their lives by overcoming daily struggles of life through self actualization, practice and learning special techniques. The Workshop will accommodate 20 participants total and will close participation after 20 sign ups. Cost to attend is $20. The Anger Management and Improving Communication skills aims at tackling a very 'commonly felt', yet very differently expressed emotion i.e. 'Anger' by everyone. We all have unique and different way of dealing with Anger which is influenced by many factors. And some may not even know the 'right' way of dealing with anger which leads to many other undesirable situations. 'Learning how to protect ourselves appropriately, physically, emotionally, and socially is an important challenge in life. We acquire anger control skills in the course of growing up... We learn how to deal with anger through interacting with others. Most of us learn how to control our anger reasonably well. Some of us remain especially fearful, timid, or conflict avoidant. Other people react to emotional upset with anger and aggression. Still others seem to be controlled by spontaneous rage reactions'. Through this workshop we put the perspective of psychology and management of anger in perspective. We learn about 'healthy anger', signs n symptoms of Anger Problems, Skills to learn to cope with daily stress to prevent future anger issues and much more. If you are interested please sign up with you name, age and occupation. These details will help us understand better the needs of the exact group that will be participating. If you have any questions please feel free to contact sister Aysha Siddiqui via email address ayshasiddiqui@synergyofmind.com

With so much tragedy and fear of backlash of increasing anti-Muslim rhetoric, we invite you to come join RCM for an informal get together. The purpose is to restore confidence in our community, to try and protect the community from any backlash, and to call the community to hold their head high and remain strong in this trying time. We will be joined by the following community members to help answer questions and provide support: - RCM Religious Affairs Committee Representative - Bassem Fakhoury - RCM Security Director (who has been in touch with local law enforcement, Department of Justice and Homeland Security) - Sarah Ansari - Counsellor and Owner of 'Rekindle Hope Counselling' - Uplift Youth Group Representative - Shaheen Bharde - RCM Public Relations Director (and InshAllah more)
