Blood Drive at a Mosque

Reason #1: Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. That means more than 38,000 blood donations are needed per day. Currently, less than 38% of the population is eligible to give blood, with only 3 out of every 100 Americans actually donating. It’s a very elite group, but they’re always looking to expand membership. Reason #2: There are four types of transfusable products that can be derived from a pint of whole blood: red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate. As each pint of donated whole blood is separated into two or three of these products, each donation can help save up to three lives. Reason #3: The two most common reasons people don’t give blood are, “I never thought about it” and “I don’t like needles.” Well, we’re thinking about it right now! And, let’s face it, as cancer survivors, haven’t we dealt with much worse than a needle prick. Plus, blood donation is an opportunity to volunteer, rather than be drafted. Wouldn’t it feel good to put out your arm for a cause and walk away knowing you’ve contributed to the good health of someone other than yourself?

Sisters' Circle | Nueces Mosque

Ladies, have you ever wondered about Islam's take on feminism? Or, how courtship and gender interactions work in an Islamic context? What about how to develop a relationship with the Quran in the midst of an overwhelming semester? Let's talk about it! Starting on September 20th, sisters of all backgrounds will have a comfortable place to chill, talk about what's been on your minds, and make new friends! Discussions will be led by the knowledgeable Sister Hareem, who previously taught Nueces' "Seerah of the Prophet" class. We are incredibly excited for this discussion-based class and you should be too (Tiff's Treats will be provided)! The discussion circle will in the Mosque every other Wednesday from 6-8pm, InshaAllah. We hope to see all of you there! [Topics will be chosen through polls on the UT MSA Sister's Page, iA!] Ustadhah Hareem Ahmad is a graduate from both Qalam Institute and Bayyinah in Dallas, Texas. She has a degree in Management Science from MIT. After completing her undergrad, she worked in finance for a few years while simultaneously training and competing nationally and internationally in fencing. After retiring from competition in 2013, she pursued Islamic education, first with a year at the Bayyinah Dream program (Arabic), and then spent a year at the Qalam Seminary with Sheikh Abdul Nasir Jangda.

Vigil for Nabra Hassanen and Charleena Lyles

Please join us for a vigil in memory of Nabra Hassanen and Charleena Lyles at Nueces Mosque, Friday evening at 7:45 PM. Partnering organizations include: Counter Balance: ATX, Muslim Solidarity ATX and the Texas Muslim Students' Association (UT). The vigil will end at 9 PM, when those who have come to the mosque to pray will finish their recitation of the Qur'an for the month of Ramadan (khatmul Quran). Charleena Lyles, mother of four with a fifth on the way and always known as the "life of the party" among her friends, was murdered Sunday by two Seattle police officers, responding to her own emergency call after an attempted burglary. On the other side of the country in Fairfax, Virginia, 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen—devoted student, daughter, sister, friend, and fashion-lover—was kidnapped and murdered in what was plainly an attack borne of racism, Islamophobia, and gendered violence. Local authorities have portrayed it instead as "road rage." These two atrocities followed the "not guilty" verdict handed down Friday to the killer of 32-year-old Philando Castile, a beloved community member and pillar of the middle school where he worked. A police officer in a St. Paul, Minnesota, suburb, killed Castile on July 6th last year as he complied exactly as required during a minor traffic stop, in front of Castile's girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter. This is a vigil in honor of Charleena’s and Nabra’s too-short lives and in support of women of color in our town and across the country; it is also in honor of Philando Castile and his family, who have been denied justice. At a time of unrelenting tragedy, trauma, and injustice, we must stand with our African and African American, Middle Eastern, and South Asian communities, our Muslim and non-Muslim communities of color, and our immigrant and diasporic communities; we must show up for ourselves and for each other. We need this time to come together, recognize one another’s humanity, and stand alongside each other. We need this moment to grieve together and to restart the unending process of healing together. Please be respectful of both the mood of the vigil and the setting. We are grateful to Nueces Mosque for hosting the vigil as the month of Ramadan nears its end and Eid approaches; that night, the community will be completing their recitation of the Qur’an and hosting a fundraiser for its reconstruction project.

Nueces Mosque | Open House Dinner 2016

Peace Be Upon You, We would like to cordially invite you to attend our annual Open House Interfaith Dinner on October 8th at 5 pm. The purpose of this event is to bring our community — composed of various faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds — together for thoughtful conversation and a delicious meal. We will begin with a tour and brief history of Nueces Mosque (the first in the Austin area). After which there will be a short presentation on salat (prayer), the primary activity which takes place in the mosque. Have you ever walked into a bathroom to witness a Muslim washing various parts of their body? Or perhaps you have stumbled across someone prostrating behind a bookshelf. Both these activities revolve around salat, and we will answer these questions and more during this period. We will conclude by breaking for the sunset prayer, and then having dinner. We would love to see you at this event and please feel free to invite friends and family, as this is open to the public! If you plan on attending, we want to be able to accommodate for your food preferences and have enough for everyone, so please RSVP: https://goo.gl/forms/NFcI9pM3Lff0BKuf1 If you have any questions/concerns feel free to contact me at this address: outreach@nuecesmosque.com
