Righteous Activism for Woke-Minded Muslims

O you who believe, be persistently standing firm for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just, for that is nearer to righteousness. Fear Allah, for verily, Allah is aware of what you do. O you who believe, be persistently standing firm in justice as witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So do not follow desires, lest you not be just. If you distort your testimony or refuse to give it, then verily, Allah is aware of what you do. Surah An-Nisa 4:135 --- From the story of Prophet Musa (AS) to the activism of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) to our more recent role models Linda Sarsour, Malcolm X, and Muhammad Ali; activism plays a crucial role in the Islamic faith. Whether you’re a woke Muslim, a woke ally, or still sleeping, this event is for you. The purpose of this event is to help us outline the responsibility we have as Muslims and people to stand for the oppressed and fight for justice in the most undeniable way: through religious text and Islamic history. To all the woke Muslims and friends out there who know that climate justice is gender justice is economic justice is racial justice (and more), be sure to listen in on how these movements are the interwoven fabric of our religion in practice and history. Join us as Sr. Yemen Monessar of Emgage enlightens us with stories of prophetic activism and righteousness in times of injustice. This is sure to be one of the most engaging talks this semester, so don’t miss out! --- On the authority of Abu Sa’eed al-Khudree (ra) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (saw) say, “Whoso- ever of you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; and if he is not able to do so, then [let him change it] with his tongue; and if he is not able to do so, then with his heart — and that is the weakest of faith.” [Muslim]

Seven Days of Sadaqah: Remembering our Deen

Seven Days of Sadaqah is a week-long effort to encourage the practice of kindness and compassion of the Prophet (SAW). Each day of the week serves a specific theme of sadaqah (translates to charity) and the events of the day correspond to that theme. . Abu Dtharr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you get up in the morning, charity is due from every one of your joints. There is charity in every ascription of glory to Allah; there is charity in every declaration of His Greatness; there is charity in every utterance of praise of Him; there is charity in every declaration that He is the only true God (worthy of worship); there is charity in enjoining good; there is charity in forbidding evil. The two Rak’ahs of Duha (forenoon prayer) is equal to all this (in reward).[Muslim] . Day 6 of Seven Days of Sadaqah is all about Thikr (remembrance of Allah). Thickr includes making du'a, sunnah prayers, fasting, forms of direct worship, reading Quran, and repeating Subhanallah, Alhamdulilah, Allahuakbar. . Join us in the Prayer Room on the day of Jummuah as we have a group recitation of Surah Kahf and talk about the importance of thikr and remembering Allah in everything we do . May Allah keep our minds focused on our deen and remove distractions from our lives, Ameen

Adopt-A-Pond

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “Belief has over sixty branches. The best of them is the words, ‘There is no god but Allah’ and the least of them is to remove an obstacle from the road.” (Riyad as-Salihin) Adopt a Pond is a program where organizations can "adopt" a pond on campus to take care of it and are rewarded with a sign placed at the pond with our name on it. Volunteers meet by the prayer room around 3:00pm. From there, we will walk to the pond (which is located in front of HPA & ENG on both sides of the SU bridge) and pick up and dispose any litter we see. It's a great initiative and lots of fun because you enjoy the company of your friends while doing something amazing. Can't wait to see you all there this Wednesday iA!

Seven Days of Sadaqah: Spreading Knowledge

*Seven Days of Sadaqah is a week long effort to encourage doing good by emulating the kindness of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). Each day of the week serves a specific theme of sadaqah, and we will have events, challenges, and games with prizes and food to emphasize that theme. Our goal is to show that doing good is fun, easy, rewarding, and that it comes in various forms. * Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Whoever teaches some knowledge will have the reward of the one who acts upon it, without that detracting from his reward in the slightest.” Sadaqah is an Islamic term that most people understand it to mean charity. In Islam, charity is not limited to donations, but also includes spreading knowledge and teaching others good. This part of Seven Days of Sadaqah actively involves everyone to share wisdom. Join us at the MSA table from 8:30 am-1 pm for fun quizzes, a chance to win prizes, and learn from our Notes of Knowledge jar. The Notes of Knowledge include a piece of Islamic knowledge, and a challenge to spread that knowledge to a few people. Later that day, there will be a halaqa to share knowledge with us hosted by one of our community leaders from 6:30-7:30 pm. Looking forward to seeing all of you there! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact the community service director, Tasnim Mellouli, at communityservice@msaknights.com.

Seven Days of Sadaqah: Project Downtown

*Seven Days of Sadaqah is a week long effort to encourage doing good by emulating the kindness of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). Each day of the week serves a specific theme of sadaqah, and we will have events, challenges, and games with prizes and food to emphasize that theme. Our goal is to show that doing good is fun, easy, rewarding, and that it comes in various forms. * A man asked Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings be upon him), “Which act in Islam is the best? ” He (Peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “To feed (the poor and the needy) and to greet those whom you know and those you do not know. [Bukhari and Muslim] Join the Muslim Student Association as we attend Project Downtown to prepare meals and care packages for our friends from the homeless shelter! This is our first event for the Seven Days of Sadaqah initiative! The theme for this day is about feeding the needy and helping the less fortunate, so come on over and help us kick off the week by serving our brothers and sisters downtown. It's a great experience and a great opportunity to share conversations with people we may not have come across otherwise. MSA Gives Back!

Knights Give Back is a campus-wide event dedicated to service, and MSA is contributing to the collective efforts to give back to our community. This year, we are working with the Center for Independent Living to build a wheelchair ramp! The Center for Independent Living creates opportunities for disabled people to live an independent life, and advocating for inclusive and accessible communities. Allah's Messenger (may Allah's blessings and peace be upon him) is recorded as saying, "Every act of kindness is sadaqah." (Bukhari and Muslim.) Think about it--every time someone uses this ramp that we built together, we will get the good deeds inshaAllah. Please meet at the CFE Arena by 7:00 AM! From there, a bus will take us to the assigned location (will update with address soon). Try to wear your MSA shirts so we look united and cool :P I have extra MSA shirts if you need one as well. This is a hands on service event, so I suggest volunteers wear proper clothing like closed toe shoes, and clothes that you don't love. I look forward to seeing everyone there! Words of Love: Looking at Love Through the Arabic of the Quran

UCF Muslim Student Association is pleased to have Ustadh Ismail Ibn Ali from Fawakih Institute join us in instructing the "Words of Love: Looking at Love Through the Arabic of the Quran" session this Friday! Love of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and His Messenger Muhammad salla Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam is something we all strive for. But what does love of Allah mean? Did you know that Arabic has over 60 words for Love! Each has its own unique flavor, and understanding the roots of these words opens up a new world of meaning, especially as they are used in the Qur'an. Join us in a fun, interactive, activity-based session as we explore the language of love. Ustadh Ismail ibn Ali is the Deputy Executive Director at Fawakih and serves as an instructor in Quranic Arabic. He holds a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Florida ('11) and a Masters of Science in Education with a concentration in Urban Education from Johns Hopkins University ('13). Ismail is a graduate of the Fawakih 2010 summer program, completing over 150 hours of Arabic training in both Fawakih's Virginia and Boston chapters. Ustadh Ismail built on the foundation he established at Fawakih to continue his Arabic and Islamic studies through independent study until he joined Fawakih in 2012 as a teaching assistant fellow for beginner Arabic. After quickly excelling in the training program, Ustadh Ismail adeptly stepped into a teaching position and taught level 1 during the 2012-2013 academic year in Herndon, VA and Washington, DC. Ustadh Ismail currently teaches Beginner and Intermediate Quranic Arabic for Fawakih. We are very excited to have him join us this Friday and hope to see you all there insha'Allah! UCF FAST-A-THON 2K15

The Muslim Student Association at UCF presents: FAST-A-THON 2K15! MSA invites you to join us for a free dinner and presentation by AbdelRahman Murphy. Every year Muslim Student Associations across the nation invite students of all faiths to experience the worldwide practiced tradition of fasting in the Islamic faith. This is done by giving up food and water from dawn until dusk, in order to empathize with those that are living in underpivileged countries and are experiencing this type of hunger and thirst every single day. Over 780 million people do not have access to clean drinking water. For EVERY person who PLEDGES to fast on this day, we will receive a donation from our Fast-A-Thon sponsors, which will go towards the Muslim Aid charity for their Dig-A-Well program, which has built over 3,000 wells in poverty-stricken, underprivileged areas in developing countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and more. Become a part of the solution, spread the word and pledge to fast on this day!
