VIRTUES OF FASTING ON THE DAY OF ASHURA:

Fasting on the day of Ashura is of great merits in Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.” [Muslim]. It is widely understood that if one fasts this day, they will be forgiven for their since for the year prior. Don't miss out on fasting this day!!!

It is mentioned from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about fasting the Day of Ashura. He said, “I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fast a day while more avid to seek its virtue than this day,” [Bukhari & Muslim].

The virtue of fasting this day was also well known and practiced among the Prophets (peace be upon them). Both Prophet Nuh and Prophet Musa (peace be upon them both) fasted it.

Before the end of his life, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told Muslims to add the 9th day also, as he is narrated to have said, “When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth.” [Muslim and Abu Dawud]. The death of the Prophet came before the following year - May Allah the Most High shower His mercy and blessings upon our beloved Messenger. Thus, it is recommended to fast on both the 9th and 10th of Muharram - which is this Thursday and Friday, respectively. If you can fast both days, even better!
