Workshop On Early Language Development
Join Speech-Language Pathology Graduate students Samreen Anwar and Aly Glassband for a presentation on early language development, effects of bilingualism and screen time. This presentation is geared towards new parents or parents-to-be who are interested in learning strategies to foster their child's language development. Creating an enriching language environment as early as possible is fundamental for children to be successful. “Parents are positioned as powerful agents of change in their children’s lives... evidence indicates that parent-directed intervention is effective in improving child outcomes” (Leffel, K. & Suskind, D., 2013). An Afternoon With Author Hena Khan

Ms. Khan is a Pakistani-American Muslim born and raised in Maryland. She has made writing and sharing about her faith and culture her life's work. Amina's Voice is her most recent middle grade novel. She also has a new picture book coming out onApril 10 titled Crescent Moons and Pointed Minarets a sequel to Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns. Community Night
READ THIS WHOLE DESCRIPTION, TRUST US :) Join MakeSpace for Community Night! The goal of community night is to bring ALL people, (the young and those who have collected lots of wisdom through their years) together for a casual potluck accompanied by an uplifting talk - because who can’t use some inspiration right now?? The idea behind this is to foster a sense of love within our community. I mean, do we know those who may be ill and can benefit from a visit? Or the new parent screaming for an extra pair of hands? The teen struggling with identity? The person grasping by the end of the rope to their faith? We hope that by coming together for some food and faith, we can build a loving family. And who knows, this causal gathering could be where you meet your child’s nanny or future boss. What? Did you think we were going to say future SPOUSE? Just teasing. We were. Cuz people wanna get married and that’s awesome! Or you can just network - share your business, and other cool things that we bet you’re now skimming through because we got you at spouse. Hah! But anyway, it’s for EVERYONE. We plan on doing this event either every month or every other month based on demand. If you have yet to get a taste of MakeSpace, THIS would be the event for you. MakeSpace Quran Program
MakeSpace is really excited to introduce our Quran program, which will begin in January. This will be a 10 week program and will entail Arabic, Quran, and Tajweed classes for children ages 6 to 16 years. **Level 1 (6-10 years): Focuses on learning the letters of the alphabet (names, shapes, sounds: heavy vs. light), short vowels (Fatha, Kasra, Damma, Sukoon, Shaddah), long vowels (Alif, Waw, Yaa) **Level 2 (11-16 years): Focuses on reciting Quran, rules for stopping and pausing, and Tajweed rules (Izhar, Idgham, Iqlab, Ikhfaa) Price: $250 per child (or $100 a month) $50 Discount for Families with Multiple Children: $250 first child, $200 second child, and $150 for third child. Sameera Qureshi, an Occupational Therapist and educator, will teach concepts related to mental wellness including: mental health versus mental illness, self confidence, identifying and managing distress or low mood, and cognitive methods students can apply daily towards promoting positive wellness during times of stress. Following this, Saliha Bazmjow - an art educator and artist - will lead an arts-based take-home project incorporating aspects of mental wellness. Hypothermia Prevention Week
Salaams! Volunteers are needed to provide security and transportation during the Hypothermia Prevention Week at Westwood Baptist Church. All drivers need to submit a driving record and receive training on the Westwood bus and FACETS van. Security Team members will work with FACETS staff member on site to ensure safety for our guests and a quiet night. Team members will greet the guests at the door, assist with handing out mats, serve meals for late guests, mingle with guests. They will stay awake during their shifts and perform hourly firewatch walks around the building. Salaam! Join Makespace for Women's Yoga with Sameera Qureshi! This is a FREE event! Day to Serve - Interfaith Community Service
Day to Serve is a unique annual initiative that transcends politics and religious differences. It unites people of all faiths, races, cultures, and backgrounds with the shared goal of helping those in need and improving the communities where we live. THREE REASONS TO PARTICIPATE: 1 - Help kids in need 2 - Build bridges with interfaith community 3 - Eat free pizza WHO: MakeSpace (Muslim community), St. Mark Catholic Church, Congregation Olam Tikvah (Jewish community) and ANYONE ELSE. WHAT: Come together to help create "Power Packs" - packages of non-perishable foods and drinks to send home each weekend with children in their school who have been identified as having need for food assistance. Many of these children's parents are working their 2nd or 3rd job on the weekends, so these food packs will keep the little ones nourished! Maghrib & Isha at MakeSpace
We are delighted to inform you that starting in August, we will offer Maghrib and Isha prayers at MakeSpace headquarters on a regular basis. In order to maximize the utility of our offices, we would like to invite you to drop by for maghrib or isha prayers. In addition, you may spend time at the headquarters to get work done, read or just kick back and relax. Amenities at our headquarters include prayer areas, a small library which is steadily growing, a kitchenette equipped with coffee maker, fridge, electric stove, etc, two bathrooms, WiFi, cable TV, chairs, back-jack seats (floor seating), prayer and more. Our offices provide a welcoming, safe and clean environment for hanging out, playing board games, reading books, watching TV or using Wi-Fi to get work done. We are just down the street from the Springfield Town Center and Kingstowne and metro accessible via the Franconia-Springfield station. We will soon start evening Qur'an classes and other activities for all ages as well. We hope to see you there.

MakeSpace Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup
***Registration is required to participate in this event. See registration link above.*** In the spirit of giving back to the community as American Muslims, MakeSpace has adopted a one-mile section of Edsall Rd from Van Dorn St. (Shell and Exxon gas stations) to Bren Mar Dr. We are organizing a group of volunteers to collect and bag trash along both sides of that stretch of road. Ending Female Genital Mutilation & Promoting Sexual Health: An I
Over 200 million women and girls are living with the consequences of Female Genital Mutilation/ Cutting (FGM/C) worldwide. FGM/C cuts across race, religion, geography, and socioeconomic class. FGM/C predates Islam and Christianity, and the practice (in all of its forms) has no place in Islam. FGM/C however is widely misunderstood by Muslims from a religious, cultural, and health-based perspective. Such misunderstandings have led to the perpetuation of the practice as a religiously based obligation within certain cultures and as a tool to control the sexuality of women and girls. This event seeks to address the need for an open forum to educate the community about FGM/C. We have brought together a diverse panel of religious leaders, health practitioners, grassroots activists, and a survivor of FGM/C to weigh in on this issue. Please join us for what we hope is the start to a nationwide conversation aimed at ending FGM/C not only here in the United States, but globally.

This class focuses on the explanation of the top most frequent 400 words of the Quran. These 400 words (a mix of Lemmas and Verbs) constitute approximately 71% of the entire Quran. By the end of this class, students will be able to understand up to 71% of the words as they recite or listen to the Quran. Coupled with general knowledge of Islam’s, this course will enable the students to build a personal connection with the Quran by understanding most of it as it’s recited. Ladies Halaqa at MakeSpace
Let’s continue the conversation shall we?! Our last circle demonstrated the need among women in our comunity for reproductive health and sexual education. If you missed this meeting, then it's not too late! Come join us on April 28th as we continue the conversation with Sameera Qureshi, Director of Sexuality Education & Training at HEART Women & Girls, a non-profit organization that empowers faith based communities to improve reproductive and sexual health literacy, and provides a safe space to obtain health information in a way that is mindful of religious and cultural upbringing and values and worldview. HEART has been addressing the need for health literacy by offering trainings, workshops, and through the publication of articles and toolkits to serve as resources for those wanting to provide sexual health programming using culturally-sensitive approaches such as using religious textual narratives to frame an issue, or being sensitive to the fact that certain demonstrations or graphics may be deemed inappropriate for certain audiences.When women are not empowered and informed about their bodies and healthy relationships, they are not equipped to identify sexual health problems or when they are being abused, nor do they have the resources to know where to go for help. Islamic Art Appreciation Series
Join Reed Society's visiting artist, Ustadh Khalid Casado from Madrid, Spain, as he introduces the art of Arabic calligraphy through the traditional teaching method used at the Turkish school of calligraphy. Students will become familiar with the traditional materials and learn how to work with the reed pen. Ustadh Khalid will teach the proportions of the letters and how to measure them using nukhtas. Finally, using the letters that are taught, students will do some creative exercises. The workshop series will take place: Tuesday, April 25 6:00-9:00pm Thursday, April 27 6:00-9:00pm Friday, April 28 6:00-8:00pm Cost: $150 (includes 3-part workshop and materials)

Partnering with MakeSpace, we offer another workshop to introduce art lovers to the sacred script. This is a nine hour workshop over the course of three evenings. Materials are included in the registration price. Taught by: Imam Zia This class will give students a strong foundation in the art of tajweed, the correct recitation of the Quran and pronunciation of its words with the precision with which it has been preserved and transmitted for 1400 years! Prerequisite knowledge: The ability to read the Quran, regardless of the quality of pronunciation, from the book. Students who successfully complete the course can expect to accomplish reading Quran more accurately, especially the important parts required for prayer, thus perfecting not just their Quran reading skills but also their prayers. This is a two-hour-a-week class spanning 12 weeks which will enable children ages 8 and up to recite the Quran properly, completely from scratch! The class is for absolute beginners and will equip the students with sufficient reading skills to further improve their reading proficiency and pace. Tajweed: Read Quran As It Was Revealed
MakeSpace is excited to offer a 20 hour intensive tajweed course. Taught by: Imam Zia This class will give students a strong foundation in the art of tajweed, the correct recitation of the Quran and pronunciation of its words with the precision with which it has been preserved and transmitted for 1400 years! Prerequisite knowledge: The ability to read the Quran, regardless of the quality of pronunciation, from the book. Students who successfully complete the course can expect to accomplish reading Quran more accurately, especially the important parts required for prayer, thus perfecting not just their Quran reading skills but also their prayers. MakeSpace Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup: Interfaith Edition
***Registration is required to participate in this event. See registration link above.*** In the spirit of giving back to the community as American Muslims, MakeSpace has adopted a one-mile section of Edsall Rd from Van Dorn St. (Shell and Exxon gas stations) to Bren Mar Dr. We are organizing a group of INTERFAITH volunteers to collect and bag trash along both sides of that stretch of road. Bags and vests will be provided by VDOT. We will be gathering at Exxon Gas Station at the corner of Van Dorn and Edsall Rd (501 S Van Dorn St, Alexandria, VA 22304 ) at 10AM and proceed from there.

Exploring the Barriers and Bridges to Muslim Christian Dialogue
Join MakeSpace and Ravensworth Baptist Church for a photography project where we use photography to explore the connecting and disconnecting factors in Muslim Christian relationships. The project will take place over three meetings of 1.5 hours with discussions centered around photographs taken by participants. No worries we are not looking for professional photographers. Trip to Smithsonian's Quran Exhibition
Join MakeSpace on Saturday, February 5th as we head to the Smithsonian's Freer|Sackler galleries to view the exhibit "The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts" before it ends on February 20th. We will be meeting at 1pm in the lobby of the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, located at 1050 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC 20560. Afterwards, we'll be heading to towards the Washington Monument to grab a bite to eat. Bring the whole family and join us for an afternoon of fun in the city! Details about the exhibition: In recognition of one of the world’s extraordinary collections of Qur’ans, the Freer|Sackler is hosting a landmark exhibition, the first of its kind in the United States. Some fifty of the most sumptuous manuscripts from Herat to Istanbul will be featured in The Art of the Qur’an: Treasures from the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, opening this fall. Celebrated for their superb calligraphy and lavish illumination, these manuscripts—which range in date from the early eighth to the seventeenth century—are critical to the history of the arts of the book. They were once the prized possessions of Ottoman sultans and the ruling elite, who donated their Qur’ans to various institutions to express their personal piety and secure political power. Each manuscript tells a unique story, which will be explored in this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition. Dr. Jonathan Brown is the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and he is the Associate Director of the Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim Christian Understanding. He received his BA in History from Georgetown University in 2000 and his doctorate in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago in 2006. Dr. Brown has studied and conducted research in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Turkey, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, South Africa, India, Indonesia and Iran. Sunday School Open House & Registration
MakeSpace is proud to announce the launch of our Sunday school program. You asked, and we delivered! With the help of your duas, donations and support, we are able to provide this highly anticipated program. Taught by highly qualified and passioante teachers, our classes will begin on January 22, 2017 iA for students age 5-13. Registration will be conducted in-person at our Sunday School open houses on January 8th and January 15th. Fee per student is $350 through end of June to cover teacher pay and supplies. However, no family will be turned away for lack of means. **Details** Philosohpical Focus: Spirituality, Idenityt and Character Curriculum Specifics: Quran, Seerah, Worship, Character, Social Issues Our goals are: * Provide an environment that will nurture a deeper appreciation of knowledge and build love for continuous learning * Inculcate proper character based on the actualization of adab * Empower our students with a deeper understanding of spirituality Inspire our students to lead ethical lives with a compassionate and inclusive worldview * Intill in our students a sense of transcendent human identity helping them see unity in diversity of belief, thought, culture, language, skin color and geographic location. * Reconcile the different identities and help students develop a strong Muslim identity.

Self Defense for Women's Seminar w/ Zaineb Abdulla
Join MakeSpace for a one day 2 hour women's seminar on self defense! The course will be taught by Zaineb Abdulla of Deaf Planet Soul, located in Chicago. During this seminar women will learn: 1. Escape from common wrist, arm and pony tail grabs 2. Escape from hijab grab 3. Subdue the opponent with an elbow to the face and a variety of chokes 4. Escape from an opponent sitting atop you 5. Identify and respond to hate crimes 6. Respond to verbal assault 7. Respond when you are the bystander to an attack 8. Discuss the long term elimination of hate crimes in our society. Hassan takes us on a journey to the sacred city of Konya during the 13th century through the eyes of Shams of Tabriz, the spiritual mentor of Jalaluddin Rumi. The journey is an expression of how Shams encounters and manifests Divine love through unexpected ways. Hassan transformed the tale into a mystical journey and an artistic experience, anchored by personal revelations. What: Join us for an afternoon of Laser Tag! We’ll first enter the video briefing room where there is theater seating and a wall of plasma screens. We’ll view a video on rules of the game and how to use our laser packs. Next, we’ll enter the vesting room where we’ll put on our laser packs, divide into teams, and prepare to enter the arena. Finally, the game begins as each team enters the arena through its own separate team entrance. Smoke fills the air as players quickly scatter into the dark labyrinth of corridors and ramps! MakeSpace is excited to host family night with Noor Kids on Friday, July 29th! We will be offering two programs - one for the kids to enjoy and one for their parents: "My Story: From Chewing Gum to Children's Books" (Young Children, 3 to 8) Put on your seat belt, Amin is taking children for a ride. Through imaginative and engaging storytelling, Amin will take children back in time to 1995, when he was just seven years old. He shares how a mistake he made turned into the greatest lesson of his life: a love for reading. After telling this story, Amin will introduce the children's book series that he writes, Noor Kids, and will one of his favorite stories from the book, "The Power of Prayers," which will be projected onto a screen. In this story, Amin will share the difference between the Creator and the created. In doing so, he will share how, while he is the author of Noor Kids, Allah (SWT) is the author of the universe. This program runs between 30 - 45 minutes and is suitable for children 3+. "I Worry About My Muslim Child" (Parents) In the challenging environment for Muslims in America, how are our children going to grow up with a sense of confidence and pride? Amin walks through his own personal story of the challenges he experienced, integrating the research that his team has conducted at Harvard, Berkeley, and San Francisco State University surrounding best-practices to help children build self-confidence and self-esteem. As background, Noor Kids conducted research on the African-American, Latino, and Jewish communities, as each of these groups have faced discrimination in America prior to Muslims. Ramadan 2016: Time for Renewal
Ramadan brings long days of fasting, nights of prayer, time with friends and family, and lots of time for reflection. Think back to how you ended your Ramadan last year. Was it with a fierce energy and renewed lease on life? Maybe you wish you had done more? However you ended it and spent the last year, now is the time to renew your journey as a Muslim. Whether this is your first Ramadan, or your 50th, come visit us at MakeSpace for an energizing and renewing experience. We will provide iftar every night, followed by taraweeh prayer, led by Imam Zia. Each night will also have a designated presenter who will speak for about 5-10 minutes about a relevant topic. Bring your friends and family, or just bring yourself for the opportunity to meet fellow Muslims observing Ramadan. Taraweeh will be held each night at Dunya Banquet hall, EXCEPT the nights of June 11th and July 2nd. On these nights, Taraweeh will be held at Nova Annandale Campus. We apologize but unfortunately iftar will not be served on those three nights. In addition to taraweeh prayers, join us throughout the month for qiyam prayers lasting through the night, special iftars dedicated to unique audiences and causes, Fajr Club, and a few reflection sessions on weekend afternoons throughout the month. MakeSpace Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup
Join us for our second Adopt-A-Highway Cleanup this year on Sunday June 19th! Join us for iftar and taraweeh afterwards at Dunya! ***Watching this VDOT video is required to attend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMqWWj4xT4M In the spirit of giving back to the community as American Muslims, MakeSpace has adopted a one-mile section of Edsall Rd from Van Dorn St. (Shell and Exxon gas stations) to Bren Mar Dr. The volunteers will be divided into two teams who will start the cleanup at either end of the adopted one stretch of Edsall Road. Each team will work its way towards the other, pass each other and end at the starting point of the other team. Each team will be going against flow of traffic. They will collect and bag trash along the way. Bags and vests will be provided by VDOT. More details and instructions will be provided by your team's lead. Ramadan 2016: Time for Renewal
Ramadan brings long days of fasting, nights of prayer, time with friends and family, and lots of time for reflection. Think back to how you ended your Ramadan last year. Was it with a fierce energy and renewed lease on life? Maybe you wish you had done more? However you ended it and spent the last year, now is the time to renew your journey as a Muslim. Whether this is your first Ramadan, or your 50th, come visit us at MakeSpace for an energizing and renewing experience. We will provide iftar every night, followed by taraweeh prayer, led by Imam Zia. Each night will also have a designated presenter who will speak for about 5-10 minutes about a relevant topic. Bring your friends and family, or just bring yourself for the opportunity to meet fellow Muslims observing Ramadan. Taraweeh will be held each night at Dunya Banquet hall, EXCEPT the nights of June 11th, June 18th and July 2nd. On these nights, Taraweeh will be held at Nova Annandale Campus. We apologize but unfortunately iftar will not be served on those three nights. In addition to taraweeh prayers, join us throughout the month for qiyam prayers lasting through the night, special iftars dedicated to unique audiences and causes, Fajr Club, and a few reflection sessions on weekend afternoons throughout the month. Ramadan Bootcamp
Join us for Ramadan Training Program! Ramadan is the time of the year where we make positive changes and wellness should be at the top of the list! We will be engaging in 8 short workouts (30 - 40 minutes in length) which are roughly one hour and half before the break of fast, iA. Training while fasting has many benefits. One study found that fasting before aerobic training leads to reductions in both body weight and body fat, while eating before a workout decreases only body weight. The combination of fasting and exercising maximizes the impact of cellular factors, which force the breakdown of fat and glycogen for energy. Ringing in the Month of Giving with Sh. Abdul Nasir Jangda
The blessed month of Ramadan is upon us, and with it comes the grand opportunity for the generous and the giving. Jangda discusses the many blessings of Ramadan, and how we can all do our part in supporting our brothers and sisters in humanity. Doors will open prior to Maghrib, with a FREE Iftar offered to all attendees. Sh. Jangda will be speaking throughout the night, including a khatira during Taraweeh prayers. “Abdul Nasir Jangda is the founder and director of Qalam Institute. He was born and raised in the Dallas area. At the age of 10 he went to Karachi, Pakistan to memorize the Quran. He excelled in his memorization and committed the entire Quran to memory in less than 1 year. After graduating from High School, he went back to Karachi to study the Alim Course at Jamia Binoria. He graduated from the rigorous 7 year program in 2002 at the top of his class and with numerous Ijaazaat (Licenses) in various Islamic Sciences. Along with the Alim Course he concurrently completed a B.A. and M.A. in Arabic from Karachi University. He also obtained a Masters in Islamic Studies from the University of Sindh. He taught Arabic at the University of Texas at Arlington from 2005 to 2007. Tajweed Intensive Course
MakeSpace is excited to offer a five-week (20 hours) intensive tajweed course. This class will give students a strong foundation in the art of tajweed, the correct recitation of the Quran and pronunciation of its words with the precision with which it has been preserved and transmitted for 1400 years! Prerequisite knowledge: The ability to read the Quran, regardless of the quality of pronunciation, from the book. Students who successfully complete the course can expect to accomplish reading Quran more accurately, especially the important parts required for prayer, thus perfecting not just their Quran reading skills but also their prayers. Join us for for first ever MakeSpace Cafe, a series dedicated towards discussing relevant books and topics. We're starting off with The Autobiography of Malcolm X (as told to Alex Haley). One of the most influential Muslim Americans in our history, we'll discuss his transformation, impact and legacy through the lens of his own written words. We'll break up the book into two sessions---Session 1 (April 9) covering Chapters 1-9 and Session 2 (May 7) covering Chapters 10-19. Tea and light refreshments will be provided. MakeSpace Adopt-a-Highway Cleanup
*** Registration is required to participate in this event. To register click here: http://tinyurl.com/pthjah9 *** Our fourth Adopt-a-Highway clean-up event for 2015 is scheduled on Nov 8. In the spirit of giving back to the community as American Muslims, MakeSpace has adopted a one-mile section of Edsall Rd from Van Dorn St. (Shell and Exxon gas stations) to Bren Mar Dr. The volunteers will be divided into two teams who will start the cleanup at either end of the adopted one stretch of Edsall Road. Each team wi will work its way towards the other, pass each other and end at the starting point of the other team. Each team will be going against flow of traffic. They will collect and bag trash along the way. Bags and vests will be provided by VDOT. More details and instructions will be provided by your team's lead. Ahmed ElHattab served as Assistant Secretary General of ISNA from 1994 - 2011. He has also been an active participant in Islamic philanthropy for the past 38 years in the United States. Since 1984 he has been in charge of ISNA fundraising. He was ISNA Acting Secretary General, 1990-1994, 2008-2010, and 2012-2013. He has attended and actively participated in numerous conventions, conferences and seminars domestically and internationally, in addition to delivering jumu'ah khutbahs in many masajid in North America. He also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees, the American Islamic College (AIC) in Chicago.

For more on the bounties that come from fasting Ashura, check out the info below! VIRTUES OF FASTING ON THE DAY OF ASHURA: Fasting on the day of Ashura is of great merits in Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “For fasting the day of Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.” [Muslim]. It is widely understood that if one fasts this day, they will be forgiven for their since for the year prior. Don't miss out on fasting this day!!! It is mentioned from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about fasting the Day of Ashura. He said, “I did not see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) fast a day while more avid to seek its virtue than this day,” [Bukhari & Muslim]. The virtue of fasting this day was also well known and practiced among the Prophets (peace be upon them). Both Prophet Nuh and Prophet Musa (peace be upon them both) fasted it. Before the end of his life, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told Muslims to add the 9th day also, as he is narrated to have said, “When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth.” [Muslim and Abu Dawud]. The death of the Prophet came before the following year - May Allah the Most High shower His mercy and blessings upon our beloved Messenger. Thus, it is recommended to fast on both the 9th and 10th of Muharram - which is this Thursday and Friday, respectively. If you can fast both days, even better! MakeSpace & KARAMAH will be providing a scholarly perspective on the prophetic model of relationships in Islam and an opportunity to learn from the example of the one whom Aisha r.a., described as "having internalized the teachings of the Qur’an in his character and personality” - someone just, fair, and loving, may God’s Peace and Blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For the past 4 years, KARAMAH has organized a series of dynamic community lectures and conversations in the month of October under the banner “Love Like the Prophet.” These events aim at addressing domestic violence from an Islamic perspective, promoting discussion within our communities about this issue, and shedding light on resources available to victims of domestic violence.
