Learning to Live in a Multi-Faith Society: The Prophetic Example
Many, if not the majority of, Muslims today live in multi-faith and multi-cultural societies. Despite what the media is sometimes trying to make us believe, in most cases this coexistence works pretty well, and Muslims and Non-Muslims live peacefully side by side. However, sometimes there are frictions, disagreement, even hate and violence. Muslims are encouraged to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him). What did inter-faith relations look like under his rule in the early days of Islam? How did he treat Non-Muslims and what can we learn from the Prophetic example? This Interfaith Week, join us for this talk by Warwick alumni Sheikh Arsalan Ahmed. Date: Friday 20 Nov 2015 Time: 5pm Veue: S0.11 (Social Sciences building) Speaker details: Shaykh Arsalan Ahmed currently teaches courses on Economics, Islamic Commercial Law and Islamic Banking. He recently completed his post-graduate (MA) studies in International Political Economy from the University of Warwick, UK. Prior to this, he received his BSc and MSc and studied Economics, Management, Islamic Finance, Islamic Jurisprudence and Philosophy. He started studying the Classical Uloom of Deen in 2008 under traditional scholars and is currently in the final year of Dars-e-Nizami Aalimiyah degree. For a number of years, Shaykh Arsalan has consistently remained in the close company of renowned religious scholars and has been formally authorised in the science of Islamic spirituality (Tasawwuf). Shaykh Arsalan frequently travels to the United Kingdom and the Middle East, and spends his free time offering Islamic learning courses, workshops and delivering regular talks to students and young professionals at various venues including mosques, Islamic Learning Centres, colleges and universities.

Islam & Me: Islam in Mauritius
Many Western debates on Islam tacitly assume that Islam is a South Asian or Middle Eastern phenomenon. Yet only 25% of Muslims are Arabs, the biggest Muslim country is Indonesia in South East Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa has substantial Muslim communities too. This diversity is also reflected at Warwick, where many of ISoc's members are from South Asia, the Middle East but also South East Asia. After hosting an Islam and Me event on Islam in Malaysia last term, this year Warwick ISoc is delighted to invite you to an Islam and Me talk on Islam in Mauritius. Our very own Muhammad Sajjaad Jeeawody will share insights into how Islam is practiced and understood on this island in the Indian Ocean.
