ISWV: Breaking Taboos-Youth Workshop on Sexual Health Education

There is a dire need for open conversation in Muslim communities about sex, sexual abuse, and consent. Additionally, it is crucial to be able to build awareness in the community in order to be able to create spaces where individuals can come together and speak openly and honestly about sex and sexual abuse, in a way that is free of blame and shame, and in a way that empowers them with the tools they need for informed sexual health decision making. HEART Women & Girls is implementing an interactive training for youth ages 16-25 to come together to understand the sexual and reproductive health needs of Muslim communities. Topics of conversation will include sexual health, sexual health decision-making, and how to be a resource for others. Dates: Sunday, July 30 Time: 11:00a-1:00p Where: Islamic Society of West Valley Age Range: Youth 16-25 Facilitators: Sahar Pirzada and Syed Hussaini RSVP required : https://www.iswv.org/event-registration-heart-youth-workshop/ The HEART Women & Girls Project (Health Education, Advocacy, Research & Training) is a nationally-recognized nonprofit organization promotes sexual health and sexual violence in faith-based communities through health education, advocacy, research, and training.

ISWV Youth: Free to be ME! - Chapter 1

ISWV youth are getting together for weekly discussions relevant to their environment through an islamic perspective. Calling all youth in the community to "FREE to be ME!" CHAPTER 1: Find your muslim identity Guest speaker - Osman Khan No matter time or place, teenagers have historically had a tough time in the development of their personal identity. However, the Muslim American teen has an even tougher time as they have to balance their faith, cultural heritage, as well as the culture of their birthplace. This makes process even more convoluted, especially when the teachings of their faith seem to be in stark contrast with the social pressures that surround them every given day. The solution though is not easy, for it requires a deep understanding (fahm) of the Muslim American teen coupled with the right guidance (hidaya) from those who possess the ability to relate to the struggles they face. Insha Allah, ISWV's first youth session in Ramadan will deal with this exact issue by helping our teens establish the foundational principles of faith in relation to their ever evolving identity. * Every Sunday evening followed by community iftar

ISWV: Fasting in Shawwāl

Asalamu Alaikum ISWV family, Ramadan brings us all together and reminds us of the Mercy of Allah and the strength, comfort, and importance of community. As many of us know too well, as Ramadan passes into the distance, so does the spirit of Ramadan, until the following year. In the hopes of changing this cycle, we will be starting a fasting program rooted in Hadith to help us keep the spirit of Ramadan all year round, Insh'Allah. Shawwal Fasting "Whoever fasts Ramadhan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime." Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, An-Nisa'i and Ibn Majah Monthly Year Round Fasting Abu Dharr Al-Ghifaari said, The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad {Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam} said: "Whoever fasts from every month three days, it is like fasting the whole year, then Allah revealed what backs this in His book Whoever comes with a good deed, he is rewarded ten folds, one day for ten." For those interested in participating, we will be fasting three days this month, the last three days of Shawwal (Monday August 1st to Wednesday August 3rd). On the final day of the fast (Wednesday August 3rd), all those who fasted all or any of the three days are welcome and invited to join at the masjid for a community Iftar and discussion. Fasting program/structure: * Day 1 of fast = Repentance -- Self-reflection and soul searching Asking God for forgiveness in ways you've hurt others or ways you've transgressed. * Day 2 of fast = Supplication -- Dua. There will be a book present in the masjid where people can write their intentions so that others can pray for them on this day in particular. Focus on the things we are needing from Allah. * Day 3 of fast = Thanksgiving & Glorification -- Alhamdulilah. Really offering the day's fast as one focused on seeing all the blessings in one's life. It is in this spirit that we come together as a community to break fast. * Iftar on Day 3 Community comes together to break fast, and shares what they gained from the 3 day fast, and what kinds of things were brought to their heart over that time.

ISWV: The Conversation - Being Muslim in America

Our first ISWV "The Conversation: Being Muslim in America" group met on February 21st with an ethnically and age diverse group of brothers and sisters with one common focus; how to practice our faith in a nation that often views Muslims as dangerous outsiders. A common theme seemed to be questions regarding how to respond to coworkers and others with whom we have daily contact when negative rhetoric regarding Muslims arises. Representative Keith Ellison who represents Minnesota’s 5th congressional district in the United States Congress responded this way when asked if Shariah law is compatible with the U.S. Constitution. "When I pray, that is Shariah Law, when I fast, that is Shariah Law, when I obey the speed limit, that is Shariah Law, when I tell the truth that is Shariah Law. When I abide by the laws of the land we live in, that is Shariah Law." As Sister Dalia said at the ISWV Annual Gala, "We need to be present in the room to witness and counter the awful and seemingly persistent attempts to dehumanize and criminalize Muslims. But we need to be strong at our core first and I'm hoping the intrafaith conversation will empower people. " We are having a "conversation" to build our confidence to be present in the room and deal with the challenges Let’s continue this monthly conversation and share successes as well as unresolved conflicts in order to better understand our rightful place as contributing members in American society as practicing Muslims. The next meeting is scheduled for April 3rd , 12pm to 1pm at ISWV.

In an effort to change the status quo of the process by which programs and services are offered (projecting religious aspirations onto people), ISWV is adopting the identity of a Learning Mosque, a term coined by Imam Suhaib Webb.
