Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik Bio:

Imam Hamzah Abdul-Malik is an Al-Azhar graduate in Islamic Law and Ethics with over 15 years of formal Islamic education and broad experience of cultures worldwide. He grew up in Imam Zaid Shakir’s community in New Haven, Connecticut, where he began memorizing Qur’an at 7 under Shaik Ahmad Lamfadel. At age 12, after having memorized 26 Juz, he chose to go to Morocco where he completed Hifz of Qur’an in a well-known Quran school in Tangiers, and experienced daily life in a Muslim country.

After completing his Quran memorization, he then traveled to Syria and attended the Abu Noor Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, learning Arabic, Islamic law, theology, and more. There he studied the sciences in-depth under some of the greatest scholars of our time such as Shaik Mustapha at-Turkmani, Dr. Mahmoud al-Misri, Sheikh J. H. Brown, Grand Mufti Shaik Ahmad al-Kuftaro and Shaykh Anas Al-Hibri and Shaykh Saamir An-Nass (both students and son-in-laws to Shaykh Muhammad Sukkar and memorizers of all 10 modes of recitation) and received his ijaazah in Quran recitation.

After graduating from Abu Noor with distinction, he then moved to Yemen, and studied at the famous Dar Al-Mustafa in Tarim, Hadramout where he focused on learning the inner dimensions of Islamic life, knowledge of the soul, and dawah. There, he studied directly under the founder, Shaykh Habib Omar, himself, receiving multiple ijaazaat from him, as well as with some of his top students.

He was then permitted to complete his formal education at Azhar University with a BA in Islamic law and ethics, where he studied over 70 Azhari books in the religious sciences. In 2012, he permanently relocated to the states to raise his family and invest his knowledge and training into community building and social outreach. In his spare time, Imam Hamzah writes books dedicated to addressing the educational needs of Muslims in secular society. His other interests include: martial arts (black belt in Long Fist style of Kung Fu), public speaking, literature, and poetry and he enjoys regular outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, and camping.
