The Islamic Society of Greenville (ISG) has been serving the South Carolina Upstate region for over 20 years. The Muslim community in Greenville began to form in the early 1970s when many Muslim families moved to the Greenville area. A local Muslim group was formed in 1988 and met in a rented room of a run-down house, and later in a rented hall of a local hotel, for juma'a prayers. On December 10, 1989, local Muslims opened Greenville's first mosque, the Islamic Center and Mosque. The building, which serves as a religious center for over 700 Muslims in the Greenville area, was previously a Protestant church, and it was purchased in 1989 for $125,000. A key factor in the decision to purchase the building was its location; the building faces northeast, towards Mecca. However, major renovations were necessary to convert the 50-year-old church building.

Jerusalem The Eternal Capital of Palestine

On Wednesday, December 6, President Donald Trump announced his decision to relocate the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem and declared it as the capital of Israel. This dangerous move contravenes decades of U.S. foreign policy and will only serve to inflame the situation on the ground. Declaring Jerusalem as Israel’s capital threatens not only Palestinians who are being ethnically cleansed, but also U.S. interests, its standing, and any possibility of being an “honest broker” in the Middle East. Rise Against Hunger Community event

Asslamo Alykom respected brothers and sisters, I hope this email finds you in the best state of health and Iman. We are glad to announce an upcoming “Rise Against Hunger” food packaging community event. ISG will be participating jointly with St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In shaa Allah the event will be held at the UIC on Saturday, October 28th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Volunteers from ISG and St. Peter's church will work together to package 27,000 meals that will be distributed to needy and hungry people around the world through the Rise Against Hunger Organization (riseagainsthunger.org). St. Peter’s Episcopal Church has already donated $5,800 to fund 10,000 meals. ISG is donating the funds for 7,000 meals, which is $2,030. Kids 7 years and older are invited to join the packaging event if they are willing to help and if they will stay under their parents’ supervision. This has the potential to be a great event, but we need your help in two ways: 1- Make a donation to the ISG team to help us meet our commitment of raising $2,030. Use the link below under the name of the Islamic Society of Greenville at the Rise Against Hunger Website. All your generous donations will be accepted to reach our goal. http://events.stophungernow.org/IslamicSocietyStPeter 2- Volunteer on Saturday, October 28th at the UIC and help us package 27,000 meals so you can represent our religion and our community as well. PLEASE NOTE, YOU MUST REGISTER USING THE SAME LINK ABOVE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP. You can volunteer for setup from 12:30 – 2:00 pm AND/OR volunteer for meal packing from 2:00 – 4:00 pm. This will allow us to have an accurate headcount in advance so we can be prepared and organized. Remember, no children under 7 years old should be present at the event. Children ages 7-14 must be under a parent’s supervision during the event. This event is a great way for our community to show the beauty of our religion and how we care about those who are in need as Allah Subhanahu wa Taalaa ordered us. It is also a great opportunity for us to build bridges and develop good relationships with the larger Greenville community and our neighbors while working together towards a good cause. Please remember the words of our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH when he said: (("O people, exchange greetings of peace, feed people, strengthen the ties of kinship, and be in prayer when others are asleep, you will enter Jannah in peace." Narrated by [At- Tirmidhi]. Let us all come together to make this event a success while serving Islam and gaining the reward from Allah (SWT). Jazakom Allah Khairan.

Ashura Potluck Iftar

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As announced there will be a potluck Iftar (breaking fast) dinner on Sat. Sept 30 at the UIC. Please see below link for details. Please sign up so we can make arrangements accordingly. Jazakallah Khair. Iftar: Potluck Dinner FILL OUT FORM Fasting on Muharram 10, known as the Day of 'Ashura', expiates for the sins of the past year. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah in 622 CE, he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said," This is a blessed day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa [Moses] fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "We are closer to Musa than you are." He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari) The following year, Allah commanded the Muslims to fast the month of Ramadan, and the fasting of 'Ashura' became optional. It is also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to fast on the ninth and tenth. Ibn 'Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah fasted on the day of 'Ashura' and ordered the people to fast on it. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor." The Prophet said, "When the following year comes, Allah willing, we shall fast on the ninth." The death of the Prophet came before the following year. (Muslim and Abu Dawud)
