Islamic Society of Belconnen (ISB) was established to serve the Canberra Muslims and the general community. Our aim is to help our community by providing them with services that alleviate the difficulty of the needy, assist community members in their personal development, help immigrants and refugees in their settlement, and provide a place of worship for Muslims. ISB works with many organisations including ACT Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), ACT Government Muslim Advisory Council (ACTMAC) and Canberra Muslim Youth (CMY) to provide services and facilities to the Canberra Muslim community. ISB's main focus is on community welfare activities and cultural educational training for children. ISB has recently established a weekend school and multipurpose venue for education and recreational activities. The premises is located at the Mount Rogers Community Centre. Services include educational, peer support, outreach and awareness initiatives as health and safety.

Hijab & Abaya Swap Night 2016

How it works: If you have unwanted, good quality, clean hijabs or abayas and you're looking for somewhere to give them: bring them along for other sisters to take, free of charge :) If you're in need of or in the market for new hijabs or abayas, come along to take and make use of other sisters good quality, unwanted items. **If you are providing/donating items: please arrive no later than 5:30 for set up** To take part in the Swap: Once you arrive, you will see separate tables with each category... e.g., Square Hijabs, Rectangle Hijabs, Undercaps etc... You will pick a number out of a hat which will determine your place in the queue. Sisters will be called 3 at a time and will have a time frame in which to select a number of items (time and item limit TBA once organisers agree). Anything left over after everyone has had their turn will be left for people to freely choose from thereafter, and if anything is left after that (and the original owners don't take them back) we will store these items to keep on hand for sisters in need in the future. sisters@hiraacanberra.org 0410 189 727

Ceramic Workshops with Idil Abdullahi

Sydney based Ceramic Artist Idil Abdullahi will be holding a 2-day ceramics workshop in Canberra this January. Idil's "Bring a Story" project is based on the idea of bringing a plate to share but instead each participant in the workshop is encouraged to bring a story of what it's like to be a Muslim in Canberra. That story will then be used as inspiration for decorating a ceramic plate they will make themselves. The resulting artworks will be displayed in a joint exhibition at the Belconnen Art Center in April with Idil's own work. Workshops are free and suitable for kids aged 12+ For more info check the link: http://belconnenartscentre.com.au/classes/bringastory.html or contact Nadia on islamicartforkids@gmail.com This program is supported by artsACT’s Artist in Residence 2016 Program, in cooperation with Islamic Society of Belconnen, Strathnairn Arts association and the Belconnen Arts Centre.
