Purification of the Soul (Deen Essentials Spring Term)

Join us for our Deen Essentials course for High school students entitled “Purification of the Soul”, this is course 2 out of 8 courses. This course will focus on 10 Obstacles in the Path of Servitude to Allah. The purpose of this course is to give students an in-depth look into the challenges facing our spiritual journey to becoming better servants of Allah (God). The purpose of our creation in this life is to align every facet of our existence with the divine expectations outlined in the Qur’an and demonstrated in the life of Prophet Muhammad. Most of the challenges we face in our attempt to fulfill this objective are largely connected to our perceptions, which have been shaped by our in ability to process the obstacles that we allow to stifle the growth and development of our souls. Purification of the soul is a common theme echoed throughout the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet in order that the believer has a more intimate relationship with the acts of worship aimed at perfecting his servitude (uboodiyah) to Allah. And during this 12-week course, students will be able to identify and address some of the challenges that hinder this quest using a combination of Qur’anic texts, fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and Ahadeeth (prophetic traditions). Students will learn how to problem solve some of the most common internal/external conflicts known to those who seek a deeper connection with Allah through worship, while developing a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the elements that tend to infringe on this connection. Worship can be one of the most spiritually therapeutic methods of manifesting our servitude to Allah, while bringing joy and tranquility to the soul tormented by its distance from Him. But this can only be achieved once we identify, and subsequently remove, the obstacles that hinder this process. Deen Essentials is a program tailored for the high school student. It is comprised of 8 courses, taken from grades 9-12. Students may join in any time. Students will go a step further and learn about their deen in depth, and at their grade level. Requirements: Grade 9-12 (or high school equivalent), boys and girls Course Schedule: 12 weeks, beginning January 17th Tuition: $199 Week One: Introduction Week Two: Obstacle #1: Shaytan: The Eternal Enemy Week Three: Obstacle #2: Our Desires Week Four: Frustration with Calamities and Trials of Life Week Five: Overestimating Our Spiritual Capacity Week Six: Obstacle #5: Keeping Bad Company Week Seven: Obstacle #6: Trials and Tests from Allah Week Eight: Obstacle #7 Sin and Disobedience Week Nine: Obstacle #8: Bad Character Week Ten: Obstacles #9: Lack of Gratitude Week Eleven: Obstacle #10: Lack of Sincerity Week Twelve: Conclusion Taught by Imam Shadeed Muhammad

Parent Testimonials: “My children have been attending Iqra Academy for five months now, and I have already started to notice a significant difference in them. As a mother I struggle to give them a clear understanding of Islam that will allow them to accept and love their religion in a country where Muslims are a minority. Iqra Academy helped me do that. It brought me great joy when my nine year old daughter, who used to always worry about wearing the head scarf (hijab) and refused to wear concealing clothes, asked me to buy her a hijab so she can be ready to wear it when she decides to. My seven and six year old sons, who used to complain about getting up to pray, now hurry to pray with us even if they are tired and in bed. Before, it was always a challenge to get my children to memorize and read Quran with me. However, now, not only do they agree to recite Quran , but they are also interested about the meanings of the Quran verses. Our children need more Muslim role models in their lives, and Iqra Academy is the place to find them. I am proud of Iqra’ s staff and of their devotion to teaching my children to love and practice their religion. Jazzakumu Allahu Khairan Iqra Academy.”

Firm Faith - ADP Spring Semester '17

Course Summary With the help of Allah (swt) we will be going through Imam Tahawi’s treatise explaining what every Muslim should know and believe in at a basic level. The importance of this lies in the fact that we will be corroborating the views of Imam Abu Hanifa the founder of the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, that have come down to us from different sources. Imam al-Tahawi summarizes the views of the great Imam and shows that they were in conformity with the traditional views of the orthodox school. This short treatise on ‘Aqida (Islamic theology) written by Imam al-Tahawi though small, is a basic text for all times, listing what a Muslim must know and believe. Course Details This brief course aims to maintain a considerable degree of simplicity, avoiding technical discussions that are not relevant to the average person. The focus is explaining the correct belief rather than involving the reader in the intricacies of debate around theological issues. Verses of the Qurʾān and narrations of Ḥadīth will be briefly quoted in support of the doctrines listed by Imām Tahawī. While the permanent relevance of the statements of belief in the ʿAqīda are obvious, the historical weight and relevance of certain of these statements can be properly appreciated only if the work is used as a text for study under the guidance of some learned scholar. Mufti Niaz will be providing such insight to this text as part of this course. Since the present book is intended exactly as one such aid towards understanding the details of Islamic belief with clarity, it is hoped that it will be of benefit to the attendee. Course Policy Students are responsible for ensuring that they are on the class email list Assignment submissions should be in hard copy form or by finishing them online as applicable. Email submissions cannot be accepted. The final exam will be cumulative. Both homework and readings will be covered. Tuition: $199 Financial Aid is available. Beginning of Guidance - ADP Fall Semester '16

Course Summary True spirituality is living Prophetic guidance, with excellence. Imam Ghazali’s Beginning of Guidance outlines how a believer should practically live Prophetic guidance– day to day, from waking to sleep. The text also outlines how to avoid sin and how to fulfill the rights of others with excellence—two other keys to living guidance. Course Details Imam Ghazali’s Beginning of Guidance is an inspiring text which outlines the fundamentals of seeking knowledge and implementing it in a Muslim’s everyday life. A clear description of the Prophet’s day (peace & blessings be upon him) is given, in practical and clear detail. This allows the student to bring the sunna into their life—from waking to sleep; making best use of their time; avoiding sin; and fulfilling the rights of others. Imam Ghazali argues that just as there is an end to this noble objective there is also a beginning to it, which must be made firm to achieve success. This is one of Imam Ghazali’s final works, it embodies a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality. The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation. This text is truly “The Beginning of Guidance.” It is essential for any seeker of knowledge—showing how benefit from knowledge through acting upon it, in accordance with the Prophetic example (sunna). “The Beginning of Guidance” is widely considered the best—and most practical—starting-point in the study of mainstream Islamic spirituality. It represents one of Imam Ghazali’s final works, and is the distillation of a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality. Take this inspiring and practical learning journey—learning to walk in the footsteps of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—and to live the realities of our daily call, “Guide us to the Straight Path.” [Qur’an, 1.6] Students will be asked to read ahead and take notes and participate in the discussion in class on how the words of Imam Ghazali can be implemented in our daily lives. Course Policy Students are responsible for ensuring that they are on the class email list Assignment submissions should be in hard copy form or by finishing them online as applicable. Step By Step – Islam Essentials Course for New Muslims - Spring semester

Step By Step is an education program designed with new Muslims in mind. It is a weekly two hour course of 13 sessions, approximately run over three months. This course runs every fall and spring in the Philadelphia area. Going through this program with us will be an opportunity for you to meet and spend time with other new Muslims with whom you can share your experience and build real bonds of brother/sister-hood for the sake of Allah. The unique objective of this course is to equip you with an unshakable foundation that will help strengthen your faith (eman). As a new-Muslim, you may already have faced many tests and trials along your journey. This course will help provide a unique Islamic perspective on how to deal with such tribulations and help empower you in overcoming any further challenges that life may throw your way, by the permission of Allah,. Course Overview This course will take you through your journey of life as a Muslim; starting from the day you accepted Islam to the day that you will return back to your Creator. You will cover various topics, such as: 1) The Fitra: You may not have realised it, but your belief in Allah is not simply the result of your learning or personal thinking, but something instinctive that Allah has put into every one of us. 2) Allah‟s Guidance: Now that you have acknowledged your Creator, how do you know what is expected from you? Through His prophet (peace be upon him) and final revelation, Allah has explained our true purpose of life! 3) Establishing the 5 pillars: Equipped with a clear road-map (the Qur‘an & the way of the prophet – pbuh), we can now establish the foundations of the five pillars upon which our relationship with Allah will is based. These foundations also play a great role in strengthening our relationship with our brothers and sisters in Islam. 4) The reality of tests: A thought that often comes to mind is: Now that I‘m a Muslim and I‘m obeying the commands of my Lord, why is my life still difficult? Learning why these tests occur and what these challenges are really about will allow you to turn these tests to your own advantage. 5) Beware of your declared enemy: We could not end without warning you of your declared enemy: Shaytan. Your failure is his mission! So you need to know who he is, how did he come about and how to strengthen your relationship with Allah to defeat him insha’Allah (God willing). 6) The Final Destination: Death is the inevitable step that you have to take to reach your ultimate destination where you will abide forever! Very soon, you will meet your Lord. For those who denied the meeting, it will be a day of sadness, one they will wish had never come. For you, as a believer, it can be the best day of your life!
