ABOUT THE CLASS

"Or know they not their Messenger, and so reject him?" (23:69)

Study of the descriptions, character, and nature of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is one of the greatest ways to increase one's knowledge of the Sunna and love for the Prophet ﷺ. In this two-day immersive program, we will be studying the classical text and hadith collection “al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya” (The Muhammadan Virtues) by Imam al-Tirmidhi. This text is a compilation of 400 hadith that examine the physical descriptions, character, worship, family, social and personal life of our beloved Messenger Muhammad ﷺ. This is regarded as one the greatest classical texts in the history of our Islamic Literature in its accurate compilation of hadith that portray the Prophet ﷺ. By the final chapter, students fall deeply in love with the Prophet ﷺ, forever painting his portrait in their hearts. The intensive course contains ~13 hours of content, commentary, and Q&A sessions, interspersed with poetry of love for the Prophet ﷺ.

For centuries, Muslims have gathered in mosques for the narration of the hadith of the Prophet ﷺ in gatherings such as this. The tradition carries on to this day, so join us in reviving it as we aim to come to learn and love the Prophet ﷺ. With exposure to this large amount of beautiful hadiths, students are able to become intimately familiar with how the Prophet ﷺ lived. Students feel as if, just for a couple days, they went back in time and across the world to Medina and got a glimpse of God’s Beloved.

Students who attend the entirety of the program will receive a signed formal Ijaza (traditional license) from Shaykh Samer al-Nass with a sanad (chain of transmission) going through scholars for generations back more than 1000 years to Imam al-Tirmidhi. ABOUT THE TEXT

al-Shama’il al-Muhammadiyya (The Muhammadan Virtues) is a compilation of 411 hadith. The book is composed of fifty-six chapters, each chapter furnished with a heading clearly indicative of its content. It starts with the chapters regarding his physical constitution, and then continues with chapters regarding his clothing, details of his daily life such as eating drinking, sleeping, walking, sitting, and his social life such as his speaking and jesting. The book then turns to the Prophet’s ﷺ inward virtue and character. The book ends with chapters regarding the death, legacy, and vision of the Prophet ﷺ. According to Shaikh Abd ar-Rauf al-Munawi, in the introduction to his commentary on the text: “the book is unique of its kind, unequaled in its arrangement and its comprehensiveness. No one has produced anything resembling it or comparable to it. In it he followed an unprecedented method, and he adorned it with the sources of the reports and the varieties of the traditions, to the point where that book was counted among the precious gifts, and it flew in the regions of the East and the West.” External Event Url
