Ka’b ibn Ujrah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to us while we were a group of nine. The Prophet said, “Verily, tyrannical rulers will come after me and whoever affirms their lies and supports their oppression has nothing to do with me and I have nothing to do with him, and he will not drink with me at the fountain in Paradise. Whoever does not affirm their lies and does not support their oppression is part of me and I am part of him, and he will drink with me at the fountain in Paradise.”

The oppressor's touch looms ominously over much of the world, but at the end of the day, Allah SWT is always in control. In the face of hegemony and oppression, what motivates our actions, spiritual states, and beliefs? Diseases of the heart can pull the believer towards a dark path - the support of monstrous militaries, love for the wealthy and powerful, and a hapless acceptance of the borders, rules, and ideologies imposed by ill-intentioned outsiders. How can we begin breaking out of mental frameworks that seek the adoration and approval of manmade structures over Allah? What is it that Allah wants from us in these tumultuous times?
