Days of Compassion Civic University

We are thrilled to announce that the Islamic Center of Southern California is partnering with the Mayor's Office of Public Engagement to host the next phase of Days of Compassion Civic University on February 26th, March 2nd, and March 5th. Please join us for this three-day program, designed to increase education, access, and engagement on the issue of homelessness in LA. Speakers will include Daniel Tamm, Kirkpatrick, and Cally Hardy from the Mayor's Office; Scott Sale from SafeParkingLA; Tommy Newman from United Way of Greater Los Angeles; and Annie Vox from LA Voice. Our program is as follows: Day 1: Monday, February 26 6:30PM - 8:30PM Homelessness 101 – This section of Civic U will provide an overview of homelessness in L.A., Measure HHH, Mayor Garcetti's Days of Compassion initiative, and our spiritual responsibility to help alleviate homelessness. Day 2: Friday, March 2 10:00AM - 12:00PM Site Visits - Section 2 will be a visit to a supportive housing venue. Get firsthand experience of how this fits in with the plan to end homelessness, and how to advocate for it. Day 3: Monday, March 5 6:30PM - 8:30PM Recap and Planning – In the final section of the DOC CIVIC U, the participants will recap and reflect in small workshops. To culminate, each congregation represented will create an action plan to implement within their faith organization. Take some time out of your Sunday, Feb. 25 (12:15 PM - 1 PM) and join us for an enriching lecture titled, "Sunni - Shi'a Divide: History & Theology" In this session, Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl (Former chair of the Islamic Studies Interdepartmental Program at UCLA, Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor of Islamic Law at the UCLA School of Law) will lead us in an engaging conversation about the Sunni - Shi'a divide. The divide between Sunni's and Shi'i's continues to plague modern Muslims and has caused a considerable amount of tension and conflict. This lecture will reflect on the reason that this divide came about and will review some of the major differences between Sunni and Shi'a Islam. The lecture will particularly focus on the implications on the Sunni and Shi'a divide for Muslims in America and the ways that it impacts American Muslim identity and politics.

The Interfaith Study Group is a joint effort by the Islamic Center of Southern California (ICSC), All Saints Church Pasadena, and a local Jewish temple to learn and appreciate the commonalities and differences between our Abrahamic faiths. This month, Aziza Hasan, Executive Director of NewGround: A Muslim-Jewish Partnership for Change, will be introducing us to her organization that empowers #Jewish and #Muslim participants for productive engagement and social change. Aziza, who has extensive experience & training in conflict resolution and mediation, will also help us develop our listening and bridge building skills as we work to build a more inclusive community of people from different faith traditions.

Documentary Screening: Dalya's Other Country

Dalya’s Other Country tells the nuanced story of members of a family displaced by the Syrian conflict who are remaking themselves after the parents separate. Dalya goes to Catholic high school and her mother, Rudayna, enrolls in college as they both walk the line between their Muslim values and the new world in which they find themselves On June 17th, “Dalya’s Other Country” had its world premiere at the LA Film Festival, and it was a full house! Less than 10 days later, on June 26th, it opened the 30th season of PBS’ award winning nonfiction film series, POV, which airs across the United States. Over half a million viewers tuned in. Our NYTimes Op-Docs short (based partially on the film) has received a great response.

With the passage of Measures H and HHH in the City and County of Los Angeles, the Mayors Office launched a Days of Compassion Campaign throughout the city. Now the Mayor’s Office of Public Engagement is excited to announce the next iteration of the Days of Compassion Initiative, the Days of Compassion: Civic University. MeToo: A Sisterhood Circle for Healing & Support

**NEW TIME! This circle has now been rescheduled to SAT, NOV. 11TH to accommodate the large amount of interest. When scrolling through Facebook, it has been made clear that many women in our Southern California community have chosen to vocalize their stories/experiences with sexual harassment and sexual assault. In just a little over a week, we have all read the stories of our sisters' pain, trauma, survival, and hope. At the ICSC, we believe that for some individuals, the power of human connection can play an important role the healing process. So, in response to the #MeToo posts that have been flooding social media, the ICSC has decided to create a safe place for women to come and share their experiences with sexual harassment & sexual assault amongst a sisterhood of healing + support. MeToo: A Sisterhood Circle for Healing & Support

When scrolling through Facebook, it has been made clear that many women in our Southern California community have chosen to vocalize their stories/experiences with sexual harassment and sexual assault. In just a little over a week, we have all read the stories of our sisters' pain, trauma, survival, and hope. At the ICSC, we believe that for some individuals, the power of human connection can play an important role the healing process. So, in response to the #MeToo posts that have been flooding social media, the ICSC has decided to create a safe place for women to come and share their experiences with sexual harassment & sexual assault amongst a sisterhood of healing + support. We will have an expert present to help facilitate conversation. This is a safe and confidential setting. All women are welcome.

Over the past couple of months, our Islamic Center community has faced a series of challenges that have understandably left some of our members feeling worried, confused, and concerned. We have added a sunset hike for those of you who like night hikes and are interested in a trail that is somewhat more challenging than our monthly sunrise hikes at Griffith Park. All are welcome. Serve + Connect at the Union Rescue Mission

Once a month, we visit our friends at the Union Rescue Mission and serve a dinner to the men, women, and children who are currently staying at their shelter. This is a great opportunity to meet other Muslims while being of service. Spots are limited, you MUST RSVP via private message and wait for confirmation of your place. Forum on Hate & Backlash

Have you ever witnessed or been a victim of a hate incident? What about a hate crime? Do you know the difference - or what to do next? For the past couple of months, the Islamic Center of Southern California has been working with the Department of Justice and other government and community agencies to develop an informative program to answer some of the questions that might come up following a hate crime/incident - and to offer helpful resources that might assist in navigating the process to follow. Please join us on Sunday, May 15 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. to meet the faces behind these agencies who are here to help. The ICSC, MPAC, LAPD, DA Office, CA Attorney General, USAO, LASD, USCIS, City HRC, and the County HRC will all have representatives in attendance. Some of the discussion points will include: - Impact to communities after a major hate incident, hate crime, active shooter, or terrorism event - The difference between Hate Incidents and Hate Crimes - Identifying law enforcement and government agencies involved in responding to hate incidents/crimes and those who provide other relevant services - Identifying ways that the community and Stakeholders can collaborate to set message/tone and engage in solidarity activities We look forward to seeing you there!

Fajr & Sunrise Hike

You're invited! Come meet us at the Islamic Center to pray Fajr prayer and then head to Griffith Park together to hike at sunrise. We usually spend 45 min to an hour up in the mountains - it's not very strenuous and we hike at all different paces. Once we're done, we usually stop for a quick breakfast at the cafe in Griffith Park and then come back to the center to volunteer at our food pantry. Fun for all ages! Kids are welcome.
