BIS strives to meet the needs of all Muslims in the greater Birmingham area. In response to the need for a dedicated place of worship in the west side community, BIS established the West Side Masjid in February 2010. The West Side Masjid is located in Fairfield just off of I-20/I-59. The masjid is open daily for five times prayers as well as Jummah prayer on Fridays

Open House

Birmingham Islamic Society is hosting a special event for our non-Muslim neighbors and friends. We invite you to our Open House. Bullying Prevention - What we know and What we can do

In this interactive parenting workshop, participants will learn about the latest research on bullying which will capture the complexity of Muslim student’s experiences. Topics covered will include a look at microaggressions, negative impacts of bullying, psychological and academic outcomes as well as suggestions for parents on how to build resilience and raise educator’s awareness of these incidents. Additionally, the presenter will learn about what they can do to ensure their own children are not the perpetrators of bullying themselves. This workshop will provide a research-based foundation for recommendations and strategies that can be used to create a positive schooling atmosphere for students and their parents.

Clothing & Essential Items Drive for Rohingya Refugees

We have all by now heard about the horrible atrocities going on with the Rohingya Muslims in Burma. Over 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have crossed the border from their persecuted villages in the Rakhine state to Bangladesh. Here’s our chance to do something. On January 6 we will be holding a ONE DAY donation drive at HCIC for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. We will be accepting all types of clothing as long as they are gently used and/or new. If there are stains, smells, or holes in the clothing, please do not donate them. Allah says in the Qur’an: “And do not give (to the needy) that which you yourself would not accept, except with your eyes closed (2:267)”. We will also be accepting miscellaneous items such as blankets, pillows, comforters, etc. Please see the flyer above for all the items we are accepting. We ask that you separate your donations by gender and size (men, women, boy, girl, etc) in bags before bringing them to the drive. Just as important, we will need volunteers on that weekend. Please bring your families for this noble cause and bring some relief to the persecuted Rohingya refugees. Spread the word!

Choosing Faith Over Fear

Do you ever fear practicing your religion as a Muslim due to the current political climate and current events? If so, you're not alone! So many Muslims do and who can blame them with all that we see and hear on the news and media? But we can overcome that fear, by choosing faith over fear. Sr. Dunia Shuaib, motivational speaker and author, will be visiting us from Dallas, TX to discuss this topic and offer us guidance from the Qur'an and Sunnah. She is a community favorite. Full Stretch Classes

We are excited to resume our ladies' only "full stretch" class, insha'Allah! This is a great way to stretch your body in a relaxed environment. Eid ul Fitr 1438 / 2017 Prayer

Birmingham Islamic Society has declared June 25 to be the first day of Shawwal 1438 and therefore Eid ul Fitr is on June 25, 2017. Our decision is based upon the calculation of the Astronomical New Moon. This method is consistent with the intent of Quran and Sunnah and is supported by the scholars of the salaf, the first three generation following Prophet (peace be upon him) and many scholars of our times, such as Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Dr. Mustafa Al-Zarqa and Allama Ahmad Shakir. 3rd Annual Welcome Ramadan Craft Fair

Ramadan is around the corner! All children ages 2-10 with their parents are invited to our 3nd Annual Welcome Ramadan Craft Fair to get excited for this special month. The cost is $5 per child (payable at the door) to cover the cost of all craft supplies provided. We will have several craft stations, including Ramadan decorations and some yummy edible treats to decorate, plus MUCH, MUCH MORE! Birmingham Islamic Society Announces Birmingham Area Muslims to Pray for Rain FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (BIRMINGHAM, AL, 11/03/16) -- The Birmingham Islamic Society announced today that members of the Muslim community will offer a prayer for rain on Sunday to help relieve the ongoing drought impacting Alabama residents and agriculture. WHAT: Birmingham Area Muslims to Pray for Rain WHEN: Sunday, November 6. Early afternoon prayer begins at 1:10 p.m.; special prayer for rain to follow. WHERE: Hoover Crescent Islamic Center, 2524 Hackberry Lane, Hoover, AL 35226 “Performing the prayer for rain is among the traditions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). We are seeking divine intervention to relieve our country, our state and our city from the drought that has befallen upon us," said BIS President, Mr. Ashfaq Taufique. The prayers, called "Salatul Istisqa" (sal-AT-al-istis-KA), will be offered after Sunday's early afternoon congregational prayer (Duhr). Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) offered similar prayers during times of drought. People of other faiths are being encouraged to offer prayers for rain according to their own religious traditions and are invited to the attend the event. In Salatul Istisqa, the Prophet would offer supplications such as: "O God, give us rain that will replenish us, abundant, fertilizing and profitable, not injurious. Grant it now without delay ... Send down rain upon us and make it a source of strength and satisfaction ... O God, give us a saving rain, good and productive, general and heavy, now and not later, beneficial and not harmful." The Quran, Islam's revealed text, states: "O my people! Seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance. He will send you from the sky abundant rain." Welcome Ramadan Craft Fair

Ramadan is around the corner! All children ages 2-10 with their parents are invited to our 2nd Annual Welcome Ramadan Craft Fair to get excited for this special month. The cost is $5 per child to cover the cost of all craft supplies provided. We will have several craft stations, including star lanterns, dhikr beads, and some yummy edible treats to decorate, plus MUCH MORE! Please help spread the word and join in the fun! Full Stretch Classes

We are excited to offer a sisters' only "full stretch" class, insha'Allah! This is a great way to stretch your muscles in a relaxed environment. We will have a trained female instructor guiding us in class. We will meet every Thursday, beginning April 7, insha'Allah. There is a $1/class registration fee, which is payable at the door. Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament (MIST)™ Nashville is a fun, educational, interactive program of competitions and workshops geared towards bringing high school students together from around the nation to develop leadership, communication, and other creative skills, all while gaining a deeper understanding of Islam and being Muslims. MIST takes place in Nashville, TN among 14 other regions across the U.S. The tournament lasts three days, ending with the Awards Ceremony on the final night. The Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament (MIST)™ Nashville currently features 31 different competitions in the Arts, Writing and Oratory, Sports, and much, much more! Fall Hiking Trip

Hike one of Birmingham's beautiful nature preserves guided by an expert hiker. Learn the basics of hiking. Reflect on one of Allah's beautiful works of art.
