Prison Blues Screening and Panel Discussion

The evening will explore some of the harsher realities of the prison industrial complex in the United States through the lens of a Muslim spiritual narrative in the premiere screening of Prison Blues, written and directed by Mustafa Davis. A Panel discussion featuring Mustafa Davis, Rafi Peterson, and Usama Canon will follow.

About the panelists:

Mustafa Davis resides in the California Bay Area and is an established documentary film producer and instructor. He embraced Islam in February 1996 in Santa Clara, CA. After traveling to many countries in the Muslim world he studied various Islamic Sciences with a focus on Shafi’i Fiqh at Dar al Mustafa Institute in Tarim, Yemen. In 2003, he returned to the USA where he pursued studies, and graduated in filmmaking at the New York Film Academy (Universal Studios – Hollywood, CA).

Rafi Peterson is the Street Outreach Director for the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP). Rafi also serves as an IMAN board member and was a pioneer in developing the “Transition House,” and Project Restore, housing formerly incarcerated Muslim men and providing them with community service opportunities, counseling, and job training.

Born and raised in California, Usama Canon embraced Islam in 1996, studying various Islamic Sciences both stateside and abroad under some of today’s foremost scholars. He served as a Muslim Chaplain for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and is the Founding Director of Ta’leef Collective. External Event Url
