The sciences of Islam contain gems of knowledge for the benefit of humanity, and are contained in the classical literature of various genre. One of the most important genre of knowledge, and the multitude of texts that preserve it, is spiritual knowledge which teaches the path to altruistic and virtuous living, transcendent of materialistic and self-centered lifestyle. CURRENT TEXT OF STUDY - Blemishes of the Soul & Its Cures
The current text taught by Imam Afroz Ali is Abu ʿAbd al-Rahmān al-Sulamī’s ʿUyūb al-Nafs wa Adwiyātuhā (Blemishes of the Soul and Its Cures). Imam Sulami was born in Nishapur and preceded Imam Ghazzali by some 30 years. They both studied in Nishapur as well, and Imam Ghazzali often quotes the counsel and content of Imam Sulami . Imam Sulami was a Shafi’i jurist as well, and nurtured students like Imam Bayhaqi and Imam Qushayri. Imams Subj, Abu Nu’aym and Baghdadi all provide detailed endorsement of Imam Sulami’s scholarship in the sciences of Fiqh, Hadith and Tasawwuf.
The current text is one of the earliest yet concise text on the knowledge of the human ego that causes the individual to diverge from the path of virtue. From the diseases of the soul, of procrastination, undeserved expectations, self-aggrandisement, greed and discontent, Imam Sulami in this text provides explanation of how to identify them in our selves, but also how to cure ourselves (and also prevent them from affecting us in the first place) from such infamy.
Over 12 weeks, Imam Afroz Ali will take the students on a journey to know themselves better; to identify our pitfalls and how to heal ourselves from such falls and reorient ourselves on the path to virtue.
