This course focuses on the nature of remembrance (dhikr) in the life of a Muslim. Muslim scholars have written extensively on the nature of remembrance and supplications generating a rich genre of literature beginning with Qadi Abu Yusuf (d. 182 A.H.) and continuing up to our times. The most notable and widely accepted book in this genre of literature is Imam Nawawi’s (Allah be pleased with him) Kitab al-Adhkar. We will, by the grace of Allah the Exalted, be reading this book in its entirety. Imam Nawawi intended this book for the layman and the scholar. With over three thousand prophetic traditions (ahadith), the Kitab al-Adhkar provides for us a wealth of legal rulings, principles of the spiritual path and proprieties that relate to remembrance and supplications. Remembrance of Allah the Exalted often presents one with practical difficulties in the life of a Muslim due to many misconceptions regarding many prophetic traditions and legal issues. Kitab al-Adhkar facilitates establishing the remembrance of Allah the Exalted in the life of a Muslim by the sound legal rulings and principles it provides.

During the live classes, the text will be read in Arabic with little translation provided. It is geared towards those students who are able to access the Arabic. Assistance with understanding the text will be provided in class, although the focus will be on the various proprieties and legal rulings discussed in the text. Though knowing Arabic will bring about the most benefit in the class, those who do not know Arabic will benefit from the class discussions on the issues raised in the readings.
