One of the most devastating crises affecting humanity in the modern age is the Crisis of Refugees from war ravaged countries, and Australia is no exception in this regard. In fact, the Australian government’s long-standing policies regarding refugees is amongst the most brutal and inhumane and contrary to Australia’s values. With an unending plethora of wars, extreme poverty and oppression, the world is experiencing an unprecedented exodus of people in search of safety. Women and children are highest on the list of victims of war and in constant state of fear and instability.

In spite of Australian government’s politics on this issue, as Australian citizens we have a burden of responsibility to respond to this crisis. As Muslim Australians, we have a long way to go ourselves to advocate for and facilitate care for the refugees, many of whom are Muslims themselves. We need to look no further to find positive response to the crisis than the Prophetic Tradition itself when his community in Mecca were made refugees into Medina, and how the Prophetic community responded.

What are some of the values we all share that should drive positive action regarding the refugee crisis? What are the core drivers by which there is an unprecedented crisis of people fleeing their homelands? How must we all respond, collectively and constructively this crisis that continues to land upon the boundaries of Australia?

Al Ghazzali Centre invites you to join us for this quarter’s Reflections On the Modern Condition seminar, to discuss and explore the holistic realities of the refugee crisis upon both the refugees and the host nations, and in particular Australia. Our guest speakers will be, Imam Afroz Ali and Shaykh Salem Naja; both the speakers are prominent members of the Australian Muslim community and are active in the area of advocating for the rights of refugees and displaced persons.
