In a world rife with hatred, vengeance and death, love is a preciously rare experience, particularly love that transcends the emotion and which resides in the core of the heart of hearts. The ways to perdition and loss seems to be well visible across earth, but love isn’t. Yet Islam is a religion for all humanity, which can be summed up as a Guidance to Salvation through love for each other and for God.
This is the subject of Imam Ghazzali’s 36th book of his magnum opus, Ihya Ulūm al-Dīn (Revival of the Islamic Sciences). This book is part of the fourth quarter of the Ihya, titled “Ways to Salvation”, and gives the seeker the medicine for healing from the diseases of the heart and finding salvation from the ways of perdition. It concerns itself with Adornment of the Heart with Praiseworthy Qualities, one such significant quality being Love.
