Amelie Couvrat-Desvergnes (Paper Conservator), Aranzazu Blat-Burgues (Paper Conservator) and Aristoteles Sakellariou (Head of Conservation)
Wednesday 6 April 2016
11:30am – 12:30pm
MIA Auditorium

In the context of the Qatar-China Year of Culture, MIA conservation has had the opportunity to study and conserve an Islamic Chinese scroll from our collection. This item, which exemplifies the combination of the Arabic calligraphy with the Chinese tradition in the manufacture of paper scrolls, is a unique example in our Museum. Through the study of materials and design, the project also allowed us to explore the context of production in China and provided us with a better understanding of this particular object and how it sits in the broader context of Islamic Art. Since the scroll was in poor condition, a conservation treatment was carried out in MIA laboratory to allow for its display in the permanent galleries.

Join experienced members of the MIA conservation team to find out more about conservation practices and this incredible scroll.
