Al-Sadu to Digital: traditional Bedouin weaving for contemporary textiles of the Arabian Gulf

Dr. Keireine Canavan
Wednesday, 26th April 2017, at 6pm – 7pm

In celebration of MIA's special exhibition ‘Imperial Threads: Motifs and Artisans from Turkey, Iran and India', we welcome Dr Keireine Canavan, Principal Lecturer at the Cardiff School of Art & Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University. This lecture will focus upon the traditional al-sadu technique, the tent dividing curtain and the interpretation of its woven symbols, motifs and patterns. The lecture will establish a wealth of meaning and communication from the memories of a dwindling number of contemporary Bedouin weavers, and culminate in aspiring, innovative digital applications and practices, for today’s modern consumer of beautiful, new ‘al-sadu’ textiles.
