Last January 2014, aid organizations claimed over one million were in desperate need of food, water and medicine and that now has now grew to over 20% in the last year, excluding the nearly 600,000 Somali’s who have been living in refugee camps for the past 20 years.

Warsan Shire, UK Poet
Warsan Shire was born in Kenya in 1988, moving to the UK in 1989. She holds a BA in Creative Writing and was appointed as the first Young Poet Laureate for London. She has read her work extensively in Britain and internationally. Her début book, ‘Teaching my Mother How to Give Birth’ (flipped eye), was published in 2011. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Review, Wasafiri, Magma, and the anthology ‘The Salt Book of Younger Poets’ (Salt, 2011). In 2013 she won the Inaugural African Poetry Prize. In 2014 she was the Queensland, Australia poet in residence. Her poetry has been translated into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Danish and Estonian. She is the current poetry editor at SPOOK magazine. She teaches workshops internationally using poetry to explore memory and heal trauma.
