A.C.T to End Racism

A.C.T. to End Racism On April 3-5, 2018 the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA and our partners will gather in Washington, D.C. for a historic event to launch its Truth and Racial Justice Initiative. As we mark 50 years since the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on April 4, 1968, we will commit to do our part to eradicate the entrenched racism that grips the United States and paralyzes our ability to see every human being as equal. We challenge ourselves and our communities to join in truth-telling, leading to actions that right the wrongs, and, with God’s grace, bring healing and wholeness to all people, and unity to the nation. AWAKEN oneself to the truth that racism is ever-present, deeply rooted in American culture, and profoundly damaging to our communities. CONFRONT racism, speak truth to power, and stand up against injustice. TRANSFORM the hearts, minds, and behaviors of people and institutions. Tuesday, April 3: Ecumenical Worship Service in the Orthodox Tradition - 6:30 p.m.: Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2815 36th St., NW, Washington, D.C., 20007 Wednesday, April 4: ACT to End Racism Rally on the National Mall - 7-8 a.m.: Silent Prayer Walk to the National Mall - 8-9 a.m.: Interfaith Service - 9 a.m.-3 p.m.: Rally and Call to Commitment Thursday, April 5: National Day of Advocacy & Action How to get there: Check out our bus page at http://bit.ly/2HO5k4T to find a ride. The Sultan and The Saint

“The Sultan and the Saint” tells an 800 year-old story that is even more relevant to us today. After the film, discuss the issues with Alexei Laushkin of the Kingdom Mission Society. With the rise of new forms of extremism across the Middle East and North Africa, Christians and Muslims around the world are facing a media narrative that pits both communities against one another. “The Sultan and the Saint” is a film that will serve as a counter-narrative to inspire Muslims, Christians, and others to take risks for peace and greater understanding. In 1219, in the midst of the disastrous Fifth Crusade, Francis crossed enemy lines to gain an audience with al-Kamil, the sultan of Egypt. Francis, who opposed the warfare, hoped to bring about peace by converting the sultan to Christianity. He didn’t succeed, but came away from the peaceful encounter with revolutionary ideas that called for Christians to live harmoniously with Muslims. Thus began a relationship between the two that lasted the rest of their lives, each man risking his life to promote peace between their faiths. This story, which is well known among Franciscans, has mainly, until now, been told from the Christian perspective. “The Sultan and the Saint” is a live action docu-drama from the Muslim perspective.

Young Professionals Luncheon at 53rd Annual ISNA Convention

The Young Professionals Luncheon provides a platform for professional growth, skill development, sharing ideas and networking. Time: 12:45p.m CST Location: South Ballroom Level 2 The luncheon will feature guest speakers Tahani Amer, Sajid Patel and Ahmad Nasser Tahani Amer Tahani Amer discovered her natural passion and inclination for engineering while watching her father fixing his car’s engine as she sat inside her small Egyptian apartment. While her love of math created a clear path for a mechanical and aerospace engineering future, it was great teachers and her father that encouraged and guided Dr. Amer. In return, she spends a great deal of her time to inspire and challenge young women to reach their potential. Dr. Amer started working at NASA in the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Branch. By working in this branch, she gained valuable experience and fulfilled her dream to work with scientists and researchers in solving real-life problems. She recalls, “It was a real privilege to work with state-of-the-art technology and with researchers who love their work.” Then, she landed an opportunity in one of NASA’s wind tunnels to conduct pressure and thermal sensitive paint experiments in support of the NASA’s aeronautical research efforts. This proved to be a valuable experience from both a theoretical and practical point of view. She has experienced the excitement of working with large CFD computer codes and climbing up the ceiling of a wind tunnel to install a velocity probe. Dr. Amer has invented and patented a system to measure the thermal conductivity of a thin film. This measurement is used in the thermal modeling of several techniques for determining boundary layer transition location on models being tested in wind tunnels. Dr. Amer holds a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, a master’s in aerospace engineering, and a doctoral of engineering from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Sajid Patel Sajid Patel is the CEO and Co-Founder of Optimal Design, an award winning, technology innovation and product development firm. After graduating with a degree in engineering from Purdue University, he worked at tech industry leaders such as Motorola, Palm and 3COM. During that time, he played an integral role in the development of award-winning mobile products. Over the course of his career, he has received more than a dozen patents. In the past 13 years, his leadership has helped transform Optimal Design into a driving force for innovative design and engineering primarily in the Internet of Things, wearable electronics, and virtual reality industries. His firm has developed products for Google, Harley Davidson, BOSCH and other leading companies. Sajid was invited to attend the TED 2016 Conference where he helped showcase advanced virtual reality technologies developed by his team. Ahmad Nassar Ahmad Nassar, President of NFL Players Incorporated, the licensing and marketing arm of the NFL Players Association. In that role, he oversees all operations of the company including commercial negotiations with the NFL and key partners such as Electronic Arts, Nike, Fanatics, Uber, ESPN and others. Ahmad received his Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago School of Law and graduated with bachelor's degrees in economics and near eastern studies from the University of Michigan. Following law school, Mr. Nassar served as a law clerk to the Honorable Denise Page Hood, United States District Judge in the Eastern District of Michigan. Prior to joining the NFLPA, Mr. Nassar worked in the Washington, DC offices of law firms Latham and Watkins and Patton Boggs. Matrimonial Banquets at 52nd Annual ISNA Convention

Two Matrimonial banquets will be hosted at the 52nd Annual ISNA convention on September 5 and 6, 2015 from 1 to 6.30 PM. These banquets will provide you the opportunity to meet and interact with other Muslim singles in a safe and Islamic way. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said, "Nikah (marriage) is my Sunnah". He also said, "When a man marries, he has fulfilled half of his religion, so let him fear Allah regarding the remaining half". Our mission is to help Muslim singles in taking the first step towards fulfilling this Sunnah. We are committed in bringing Muslim singles together in accordance with the Islamic principles and guidance. Our unique event facilitates the participants to meet each other in a relaxed and informal environment. Because of short rotation time among groups, we ask you to prepare in advance. Reflect on questions that matter to you and provide information to others about you. Many participants find it effective to carry business cards with their contact information. We encourage casual attire for your comfort. Men tend to wear dress pants and a shirt or blazer; women tend to wear skirts, dresses, or cultural clothing.

A Conversation with Shaykh Rached Ghanouchi on Tunisia's Arab Spring: Exemplifying Islamic Values, Promoting Citizens' Rights, and Building Peaceful Communities

The Islamic Society of North America & Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy present: A Conversation with Shaykh Rached Ghanouchi on Tunisia's Arab Spring: Exemplifying Islamic Values, Promoting Citizens' Rights, and Building Peaceful Communities Rached Ghannouchi is the co-founder and President of the Nahdha (renaissance) movement in Tunisia, which emerged in the recent elections as the largest party in the National Constituent Assembly (NCA). Born in the village of El-Hamma in the south of Tunisia in 1941, Shaykh Ghannouchi was educated in Tunisia's Zaitouna university, and then continued with studying philosophy in Cairo, Damascus, and Paris. Shaykh Ghannouchi became active in politics by setting up the Islamic Tendency movement in 1981, later changed to Ennahdha (Renaissance). He was imprisoned due to his political activities from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1987 to 1988. After the falsification of the 1989 legislative elections by former president Ben Ali, Shaykh Ghannouchi left for London where he lived as a political exile for two decades, until his return home on 30 January 2011, after the Tunisian revolution. Shaykh Ghannouchi is one of the most important and prolific thinkers in modern Islamic Political thought and theory. Since the early 1980's, he has been an advocate of the compatibility between Islam and the principles of pluralism, freedom, modernity and democratic governance. His views and writings are influential in Tunisia, and the rest of the Arab and Muslim worlds.

49th Annual ISNA Convention

We are back in our nation's capitol for our 49th convention and could not be more excited. We will enter convention this year on the heels of Ramadan, refreshed, renewed, and ready for the November Presidential elections. It will be an extraordinary and inspiring atmosphere during convention this year and we hope you will be a part of it. REGISTER: http://www.isna.net/Conferences/pages/Annual-Convention.aspx With four days of jam packed sessions and workshops, including a special MSA and MYNA track, there is something for everyone! The ISNA convention is also the only place where you can see all your favorite speakers, and a ton of new up and coming movers and shakers, in one location. This year's theme, "One Nation Under God: Striving for the Common Good," will focus on the six over-arching purposes of revelation from God in the Quran that guide our lives and how we, as diverse people of faith, can live up to our responsibility to be stewards of the earth and lead in accordance with the principles given to us by God. These include preservation of respect for: (1) freedom of religion for all (2) life (3) family (4) property rights (5) knowledge (6) dignity/human and civil rights. At a time where freedom of religion, fair and open elections, knowledge, speech, and expression are increasingly limited across the world for people of all faiths, it is our responsibility to protect these freedoms. We hope to see you in our nation's capitol at this year's Annual ISNA Convention!! 38th Annual ISNA Canada Convention

The 38th ISNA Canada Convention is a united step towards promoting within ourselves a new attitude of wisdom and commitment in addressing the various challenges around us, and endeavoring to create a new era. Thus, we invite you to renew the commitment to rise to the challenge, whether it is on a global, national, local or individual level – with positivity, faith and vision. TICKETS INFO: Family: $25 Adult: $15 Student: $10 Children's Program: $5 per child (5-11) Babysitting: $5 per child (0-4) A NEW ERA UNFOLDS: RISING TO THE CHALLENGE It seems that everywhere we turn, the tidal waves are rising higher. With news headlines that make us cringe, internal conflicts that occupy us, social challenges that seem to sprout everywhere, and acts of ignorance that move our efforts ten steps backwards, it is easy to despair or go on the defensive. Although the defense may save the game, we all know it’s the offense that wins it. Thus, we invite you to renew the commitment to rise to the challenge, whether it is on a global, national, local or individual level – with positivity, faith and vision. “Do not despair, Verily Allah is with us.” – Prophet Muhammad said to Abu Bakr, the night of emigration to Medina. The 38th ISNA Canada convention is centered on the multi-layered theme of new beginnings, raising awareness, and addressing challenges with wisdom. Our objective is to promote within ourselves a new attitude when it comes to dealing with the various challenges, as we strive to create a new era. Prominent Muslim leaders and speakers will lend their insight, experience, and knowledge, to discuss issues related to family relations, peer pressure, addictions, extremism, counseling, morality, marriage, and leadership. Their guidance is desperately needed as we build skills to navigate the world of media, phobias, and misconceptions. We hope to also explore crucial avenues of our involvement in the expanding horizons of the Halal meat industry, Islamic investments and the environmental shift. Our aim with this convention is to re-ignite the Islamic value of being exemplary human beings and citizens, inspire a wider moral vision amongst the emerging generation through current leadership, and equip them with practical steps to move forward, receive and handle each issue with wisdom and excellence. The effects of these efforts transcend culture, ethnicity, and race, thus making them universally beneficial to all. Such is the definition of a Muslim. Let us strive to take this step forward and rise to the potential of the future together.
